Diagnosis

Frontal vitta dark brown with greyish pollinosity, anterior margin yellowish; length of postpedicel 2.4 times the length of pedicel; scutum with three dark brown, inconspicuous vittae; wing yellowish, haltere yellow; male terminalia with long, straight and narrow surstylus curved at apex, articulated with epandrium, and almost the same length as epandrium; sternite 5 wide, with two long, hook-shaped apical projections bearing four strong spines.

Description

Male holotype. Body length 3.5 mm; wing length 3 mm.

Head. Eye with sparse setulae. Frontal vitta brown with grey pollinosity, anterior margin yellowish. Interocular space 0.4 mm. Three pairs of fr, two of which are more developed and converging, with intercalated setulae. Orb two pairs, anterior pair lateroclinate, posterior pair reclinate. Ocellar tubercle grey pollinose; oc proclinate and developed; ocellar tubercle with one pair of weakly developed setae in addition to oc, and two posterior short setulae. Poc divergent. Fronto-orbital plate and parafacial with grey yellow pollinosity. Parafacial with short setae on dorsal half. Gena dark brown, grey pollinose. Scape brown pollinose and with one seta reaching pedicel. Pedicel brown, suture and apical margin yellowish. Postpedicel dark brown with golden yellow pollinosity, 2.4 times the length of pedicel. Arista brown, with short pubescence, rays shorter than width of base of arista. Palpus dark brown, spatulate.

Thorax. Greyish with golden yellow pollinosity, scutum grey with faint golden yellow pollinosity, three dark faint vittae, along acr and dc. Acr 2: 3 in irregular rows. Dc 2:3, first presutural seta with half the length of second presutural seta. Postpronotum with two well-developed setae and a weaker one. Pra two, both setae well developed. Proepimeral setae two, seta closest to spiracle longer, second seta weakly differentiated, proepimeron without setulae. Katepisternal setae1:1, with one weakly developed seta between them, katepisternum with short setulae.

Wing. Yellowish. Calypter whitish with yellowish margin. Haltere yellow.

Legs. Coxae and femora dark brown, trochanters yellow, apex of femora and tibiae yellow; tarsi dark brown with whitish pulvilli. Fore femur with a row of short setae on av surface; pd surface with a row of long setae, setae becoming longer from base to apical third; p surface with two rows of setae shorter than pd row; pv surface with a row of long setae on apical half; v surface bare. Fore tibia with a pre-apical seta on d surface; ad surface with one median and one apical seta, both weakly developed and subequal in length; av surface without differentiated setae; pv surface with an apical seta; v surface with an apical seta; pd surface with a pre-apical seta. Fore first tarsomere with two or three well-differentiated basal setae on v surface. Mid femur with a row of sparse setae on av surface, setae shorter and closer together on apical half; ad surface with two pre-apical setae; pv surface with a differentiated basal seta, with two irregular rows of setae from basal third to apex, forming a ctenidium on apical half, ventral setae shorter; p surface with three pre-apical, well-differentiated setae. Mid tibia on v and a surfaces with two developed apical setae, one long and one short; ad surface with a developed pre-apical seta; v surface setulose, with short and weak setae; pd surface with a short pre-apical seta; p surface with a median seta and a short pre-apical seta; pv surface with a developed apical seta; d surface with a developed pre-apical seta. Hind coxa setulose on posterior margin. Hind femur on ad surface with a row of developed sparse setae; av surface with a row of short setae, on apical third with two developed setae; v surface on basal half setulose; d surface with one developed seta on apical third; pd surface with one differentiated seta on apical third. Hind tibia with a median seta and a pre-apical seta on d surface; a surface with a pre-apical short seta; ad surface with a median seta at the same level as d median seta, and a pre-apical seta; av surface with a developed median apical seta; pv surface with a developed apical seta. Hind tarsi broken off.

Abdomen. Grey with a brown vitta on posterior half of tergites 2–5. Sternite 1 bare. Sternite 5 ( Figure 2B View Figure 2 ): wide, with two sclerotized, long basal processes, forming an apical hook bearing four strongly developed spines. Terminalia ( Figures 3B View Figure 3 , 4B View Figure 4 ): epandrium longer than wide, round and setose, on basal area with long setae near one another; surstylus long, narrow, straight, curved only at apex, articulated with epandrium, almost the same length as epandrium, with short and sparse setae; cercal plate fused on apical third (V-shaped), apex round. Hypandrium and associated structures as in Figure 5B View Figure 5 .

Female. Unknown.

Biological notes

According to collecting label data this species has potential forensic importance particularly for the departments of Norte de Santander and Antioquia in Colombia, because it has been collected in aquatic and terrestrial forensic experiments using pig carrion.

Comments

The holotype lacks both fore legs, the mid and hind legs on the right side and the tarsi on the left mid and hind legs. The second presutural dorsocentral setae are also missing.

Etymology

The specific epithet, chitarera , refers to the name given by the Spaniards to the inhabitants of Norte de Santander ( Colombia) in Pamplona, type locality of the species, and other regions of the department. Noun in apposition .
