Type species: Neotrichobia arizonensis Tuttle & Baker, 1968 View in CoL

Diagnosis

Within tribe Petrobiini , prodorsum with three pairs of setae (v 2, sc 1 and sc 2), hysterosoma with nine pairs of setae (c 1–3, d 1–2, e 1–2, f 1–2) inserted on small tubercles dorsally and three pairs of lyriforms (ia, im and ip); central region of adult prodorsum and opisthodorsum smooth without striae ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 and 5 View FIGURE 5 ); a narrow band of transverse striae between prosoma and opisthosoma; podosomal venter of adult and nymph with many coxal setae and intercoxal setae, that of larva with same coxal setae and intercoxal setae of the family Tetranychidae ; peritreme anastomosing distally; tarsus I and tarsus II with typical duplex setae, tibia II–IV with one solenidion respectively.

Remarks

Previously, Neotrichobia was placed in its own tribe Neotrichobiini ( Tuttle & Baker 1968) . It is unique in having many ventral and coxal setae in the post-larval stages. Normally, adult Tetranychidae have two pairs of setae on coxae I (1b, 1c), no more than two pairs on coxae II (2b, 2c), and one pair on both coxae III (3b) and coxae IV (4b), and three pairs of intercoxal setae, 1a between coxae I, 3a between coxae III, 4a between coxae IV. Departures from the typical body setation of spider mites is unusual but not unique to Neotrichobia , with coxal hypertrichy also being present in Tauriobia and the subgenus Paraplonobia Brachynychus , and dorsal hypertrichy in Dasyobia ( Lindquist 1985) .
