CONTEXT AND CONTENT. Order Eulipotyphla , family Soricidae , subfamily Soricinae , tribe Blarinini , genus Cryptotis ( Hutterer 2005; Woodman 2018). The genus Cryptotis , which included 12 recognized species in 1974 ( Choate and Fleharty 1974), now includes 56 recognized species ( Woodman 2018, 2019; Guevara 2023; Woodman 2023b). Although historically treated as feminine in gender ( Miller 1912; Miller and Kellogg 1955; Hall and Kelson 1959; Hall 1981), a ruling by ICZN (2006) determined Cryptotis should be treated as a masculine noun.
