Variation. Degrees of melanism varies in this species ( Figs. 168–171 View FIGURES 165–179 ). Two individuals observed lack of pronotal tomentous band ( Figs. 169–170 View FIGURES 165–179 ). Only one female is heavily tomentous and has narrow lateral bands on elytra.

Type material. The holotype of C. nigra ( Kano, 1931) is preserved in Kano Collection of NSMT, and labeled: FORMOSA / T. KANO [pale yellow label] // Naifunpo, 20.V.1929 [in Japanese, reverse]// HOLOTYPE / Callynomes / davidi FAIRM. / ssp. nigra KANO, 1931 [red label with a black border] (female, NSMT, Figs. 96– 97 View FIGURES 84–97 ). The holotype is greasy and not totally black, a small red macula near the anteapical umbone of elytron was observed. The collecting site is Naifunpo nearby Mount Niitaka (Mount Yushan).

Distribution. Taiwan Island.

Natural history. Adults of Clinterocera nigra were observed crawling on ground in forest, and the body is always covered with mud ( Yang 2008; Mr. Yu-Tang Wang, personal communication, June 2013). Larvae were found in rotten wood, and later emerged in the laboratory (Mr. Fu-Sheng Huang, personal observation, May 2013, Fig. 203 View FIGURES 200–203 ).

Remarks. The genus Clinterocera in Taiwan was previously represented by two subspecies of C. davidis : this species occurring in Asian continent with orange-red elytra was firstly recorded by Kano (1926) from Wulai in Taipei Hsien, and followed by most subsequent authors ( Niijima & Kinoshita 1927; Miwa 1931; Kato 1933; Miwa & Chûjô 1939; Kurosawa 1973; Kobayashi 1980; Miyake et al. 1991; Sakai & Nagai 1998; Yu et al. 1998), while omitted in recent published catalogues ( Smetana 2006; Bezděk 2016). Kano (1931) described the subspecies C. davidis nigra based on a black specimen from central Taiwan, but this black subspecies was never mentioned in any taxonomic works since the 1940s ( Miwa 1931; Miwa & Chûjô 1939), until recent years ( Smetana 2006; Bezděk 2016). It seems that Kano’s works were partially based on the “Shiraki Collection”, which includes a large number of non-Taiwanese specimens originally deposited in the BMNH and brought to Taiwan by Dr. Tokuichi Shiraki in 1916. The collecting sites of these specimens were subsequently mislabeled from Taiwan with imprecise collecting data ( Kurosawa 1980a; Chu & Hsiao 1981; Chu 2011). After a few works on the beetle fauna of Taiwan were published in 1930s ( Miwa 1931; Miwa & Chûjô 1939), Japanese Coleopterists became aware of these problematic specimens. Although Kano (1931) stated that he collected the holotype of C. davidis nigra himself from Naifunpo near Mount Yushan in Nantou Hsien on 20 May 1927, he was also implicated in unreliable data of some voucher specimens ( Kurosawa 1980a, 1980b, 1981; Chu & Hsiao 1981). Some authors doubted the validity of this subspecies due to the uncertaintly with the label data and the lack of additional melanistic specimens of Clinterocera from Taiwan. However, this situation was not formally pointed out in relevant works ( Yu et al. 1998; Chu 2011; Mr. Hirokazu Kobayashi, personal communication, September 2016).

With the discovery of new melanistic specimens ( Figs. 170–171 View FIGURES 165–179 ), the authenticity of C. nigra is obviously verified. Based on a detailed comparison of type and additional specimens, the melanistic individuals are confirmed conspecific with the normal coloration specimens from Taiwan, but they can be readily separated from the specimens of C. davidis from Asian continent by the unique characters given in the differential diagnosis section. Consequently, we regard Taiwanese Clinterocera nigra as a valid species. Simultaneously, all records of C. davidis from Taiwan should be attributed to C. nigra .
