( Figs. 56a–56e)

Osbornellus compressus Linnavuori 1959: 217 View in CoL .

Redescription. Length: 3.9–4.6 mm. Member of the species O. affinis group ( Fig. 1d). Vertex rounded; median length slightly greater than width between eyes at posterior margin. Yellowish-brown with faint spot on each side of coronal suture. Pronotum yellowish-brown with irregualar light and dark band along anterior margin. Scutellum light yellow-brown with darker spots in basal angles. Anterior wing transparent, pale yellow, with brown along costa and commisural line; some cross-veins brown.

Male genitalia: Pygofer about twice as long as greatest width, moderately projected posteriorly, apex slightly widened and rounded; macrosetae very long, distributed along apical third of pygofer ( Fig. 56a). Valve ovate, margins rounded, curved anterior medially. Plates long, apex pointed, setae plumose ( Fig. 56b). Style with apophysis short, curved and striate, apex truncate ( Fig. 56c). In ventral view aedeagus with base narrow; shaft narrow, straight, shorter than ventral processes, apex truncate ( Fig. 56d). Ventral processes arising at one-fourth length of aedeagus, straight from base, apex pointed. In lateral view, shaft with wide base, curved dorsad, tapering, apex truncate, shorter than ventral processes; dorsal projection short and blunt. Gonopore apical. In lateral view; dorsal projection short, truncate, shaft of aedeagus curved dorsad, almost semicircular. Ventral processes separated from shaft, narrow, curved dorsad, apices very pointed ( Fig. 56e).

Diagnosis. Very similar in appearance to O. affinis , but in ventral view the ventral processes of O. compressus are separated from the base, straight and smooth, whereas in O. affinis they are wider, divergent and rugose.

Distribution. Mexico, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, and Trinidad and Tobago; 0-1300 m.
