( Figs. 53a–53e)

Scaphoideus affinis Osborn 1923: 39 View in CoL .

Osbornellus affinis (Osborn) View in CoL . Linnavuori 1959: 216, Metcalf 1967: 2178.

Redescription. Length: 3.6–4.9 mm. Member of the species O. affinis group ( Fig. 1d). Vertex rounded; median length slightly less than width between eyes at posterior margin. Bright pale yellow, generally unmarked. Sometimes with two weak gray lines on anterior part of vertex and between ocelli, two red or gray dots on either side of anterior median vertex, or similar markings on posterior part of coronal suture. Pronotum slightly darkened, with faint band along anterior margin. Scutellum light yellow with brown spots in basal angles. Anterior wing transparent yellow, with faint brown spot at apices of claval suture and claval veins, rarely also at ends of costal veinlets.

Male genitalia: Pygofer less than twice as long as wide, moderately projected posteriorly, apex oblong, sides rounded to broad point; macrosetae long, distributed along apical third of pygofer ( Fig. 53a). Valve margins rounded, slightly curved anterior medially. Plate long, apex pointed, setae short ( Fig. 53b). Style with short apophysis, rugose, straight, apex truncate ( Fig. 53c). Aedeagus in ventral view, with narrow base, curved, with lateral margins curved and wide; shaft straight, slender, apex truncate, shorter than ventral processes ( Fig. 53d). Ventral processes arising at one-third length of aedeagus, divergent, rugose for most of length, apices pointed. In lateral view shaft slender, apex truncate, curved dorsad then caudad near apex, shorter than ventral processes; dorsal projection wide and truncate. Gonopore apical. Ventral processes very separate from shaft, tapered, slender, with sclerotized spirals, apices pointed ( Fig. 53e).

Diagnosis. Very similar in appearance to O. reversus , but in lateral view the aedeagal shaft of O. affinis is curved dorsad, then caudad near apex, whereas in O. reversus it is curved caudad, then ventrad.

Distribution. Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, and Bolivia; 0– 1300 m.
