Eugenia pleurocarpa is distributed along the Mexican Pacific coast mainly in the states of Nayarit, Jalisco, and Guerrero, but also with a record in central Mexico. Eleven collection records are known in Mexico. The occurrence biome is the Dry Tropical Forest and the Humid Montane Forest from 300 to 1,000 m elev. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) exceeds the thresholds for a threatened category under the criteria B. Potentially its area of occupancy (AOO) based on the habitat available also exceeds the thresholds of Endangered category, but currently there are only up to 10 known locations, and all of them have ongoing threats. The species’ habitat is impacted by the development of tourism and agricultural activity in the case of the Guerrero state, but in other locations the rate of ecological degradation is very low, since specimens were collected in the “El Tepozteco National Park”, in Hidalgo ( CONABIO 2018, DOF 1937). Therefore, Eugenia pleurocarpa is classified here as Near Threatened (NT) due to the low number of locations and the continuing decline of habitat quality. Further field surveys and information on habitat trend is needed to confirm if its area of occupancy does not exceed the thresholds of a threatened category.
