Eugenia turneri is known only from the type collection, made in 1950, at 1,521m elev., from the municipality of Coalcoman, state of Michoacán. The occurrence biome is the Humid Montane Forest of the Sierra de Coalcoman. Although the region is considered as presenting a good state of conservation since there are large areas of vegetation, from the satellite images (Google Earth—https://www.google.com.br/earth/) it is possible to observe areas with exposed soil due to deforestation, understory cleaning or burning, near to the locality where this species was collected. There are areas of crop production on small scale, but the region is known by a high level of flora endemism. There are intentions to transform the region of Rio Balsas into an area protected by the environmental services ( CONABIO 2018, Brand 1960). However, currently there is no conservation measure in place for this species or its habitats, even though the state of Michoacán is known for having a great diversity of flora species (CONABIO 2005). Taking a precautionary approach Eugenia turneri is here classified as Critically Endangered (CR), under B2ab(iii). It is worth mentioning that the only existing collection was made in 1950, therefore, and new efforts must be made to collect the species in this region. To confirm if this species could be also tagged as “Possibly Extinct” the documentation must summarize the lines of evidence for and against extinction, describing the surveys carried out to search for the species and specifying the date and relevant details of the last confirmed record (IUCN 2019). According to IUCN Standards and Petitions Committee (2019) the status of all taxa assigned ‘Possibly Extinct’ tags should preferably be reviewed at five-year intervals.
