Haplothrips distinguendus (Uzel) View in CoL
Anthothrips distinguendus Uzel, 1895, p. 239 .
Widespread across Europe, particularly in the flowers of Cirsium View in CoL and Carduus (Asteraceae) View in CoL ( Mound et al. 1976), this species was recorded from Iran by Mortazawiha (1995), but with no indication of locality or plant host. Only one specimen from Iran has been examined in this study.
Diagnosis
Body and legs dark brown, fore tarsi and distal apex of fore tibiae yellowish; antennal segments IV–VI yellow at base and brown at apex ( Figure 23 View Figures 22–31 ); major setae on head and pronotum shaded, sub-basal wing setae pale or shaded, setae on tergite IX and S1 on other tergites pale; forewings pale, dark at extreme base. Head with maxillary stylets 0.6–0.7 of head width apart, not reaching postocular setae; antennal segment III with two sensoria (cf. Figure 27 View Figures 22–31 ); postocular setae pointed, extending beyond posterior margin of eyes, shorter than eyes in females but usually as long as eye in males. Pronotum with five pairs of finely pointed, major setae, anteromarginals as long as anteroangulars or longer; mesopresternum boat shaped. Fore tarsal tooth small or minute in female, conspicuous in male. Forewing with sub-basal setae S1, S2 and S3 blunt with white tip. Pelta usually bell-shaped; tergite VII with campaniform sensilla and setae similar to those on VIII, with one pair of microsetae (cf. Figure 34 View Figures 32–34 ); tergite IX setae S1 pointed (cf. Figure 31 View Figures 22–31 ), S2 and S3 acute, S2 slightly longer than S 1 in female but shorter than tube; S1 on other tergites finely pointed. Tube long (cf. Figure 30 View Figures 22–31 ); about three times as long as basal width.
