Petioles 0.5–2.5 cm long; blades (2.5–)7.5–24.5 × 3.5–9 cm, membranaceous, elliptic, base acute, apex acuminate, margin entire, glabrous on both sides, or pubescent to white pilose along the midvein abaxially. Inflorescence 1–6 flowers, peduncle 1.5–4.5 mm long; bracts 4–6 mm long, ovate, subfoliaceous; pedicels 0.6–1.5 cm long; sepals unequal, 2 series, 0.7–1.7 cm long, ovate to obovate, obtuse, inconspicuous venation; corolla infundibuliform, white with yellow throat, lower tube 0.9–1.6 × 0.4–0.6 cm, straight to slightly geniculate, twisted around the anthers, staminal ridges present, upper tube 2.8–4.9 × 1.1–1.7 cm, cylindrical, suprastaminal corona of five wing-shaped lobes present, opposite the anthers, along the tube, limb lobes (1.9–) 2.9–4 × (1.4–) 1.8–3 cm, obovate; stamens inserted on the apex at the lower tube, anthers 6–7 mm long, included, yellow; pistil 0.7–1.2 cm long, nectary present. Follicles 4–6 × 2.5–4 cm, obliquely ellipsoid, apiculate to acute, with 2 lateral ridges, usually not lenticellate, green-yellowish, orange-brownish, smooth to warty, glabrous; seeds 0.9–1.1 cm long.
Habitat and phenology: —Tropical deciduous forest, evergreen forest, zones of deciduous to oak forest, on river banks, and secondary vegetation, with an altitudinal range from 0–1100 m a.s.l. Flowering and fruiting throughout the year.
Distribution: Mexico (Campeche, Chiapas, Colima, Hidalgo, Morelos, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Puebla, Tabasco, Tlaxcala, Veracruz, and Yucatan, Fig. 6g View FIGURE 6 ), Central America and northern South America.
Conservation status: —This species is widely distributed from Mexico to South America. In Mexico, it grows in different vegetation types and elevations and in numerous protected areas. It is also cultivated in parks and house backyards and as living fences because of its tolerance to environmental perturbation. Its area comprises an EOO of 1,057,569 km 2 and AOO of 272 km 2. We conclude that T. litoralis is not under threat.

Notes: — Tabernaemontana litoralis is easily recognized by its showy white infundibuliform corolla. However, in a phylogenetic analysis by Simões et al. (2010), the samples included under the name S. litoralis and S. macrophylla Greenman (1900: 310) (regarded as conspecific by Morales and Méndez, 2005) were nested in two different and well-supported clades, suggesting two distinct molecular entities. Studies of the type specimens and various collections over the wide distribution showed that the only clear differences between these two species are the size of the sepals and the locality. The specimens corresponding to T. litoralis have inner sepals 1–1.5 cm long and are distributed in Mexico and Central America. In contrast, the specimens corresponding to Stemmadenia macrophylla have sepals of 4–7 mm long and are distributed from Guatemala to Costa Rica. Better sampling is needed to provide a more complete evaluation of these two species.
