Perennial herbs. Rhizomes short.Culms densely caespitose, 6–30 cm tall, ca. 1 mm thick, trigonous, densely hispidulous, with brown and persistent sheaths at base. Leaves equal to culms; blades 1.5–3 mm wide, flat, soft, densely hispidulous on both surfaces, slightly revolute at margins.Involucral bracts leaf-like, shorter than inflorescence, densely hispidulous, sheathed. Spikes 2 or 3, cylindrical, 10–15 mm long, 3–3.5 mm wide, androgynous, terminal 2 usually exerted from a bract sheath, lateral 1 exerted from base of culm, long peduncled; staminate part of spike shorter than or equal to pistillate part. Staminate scales ovate, 2.5–3.5 mm, acute at apex, pale green, green 1-veined costa. Pistillate scales oblong, ca. 3.5 mm long, attenuate and mucronate at apex, yellowish green, green 3-veined costa. Perigynia green, slightly longer than scales, oblong-obovoid, compressed trigonous, ca. 4 mm long, densely hispidulous, 2-veined laterally and thinly veined, shortly stipitate at base, ciliate at margins, abruptly contracted into a short beak at apex; orifice shortly 2-lobed with minute teeth. Achenes oblong-obovoid, compressed trigonous, ca. 2 mm long, attenuate at base, brown at maturity, abruptly contracted into a beak at apex; styles short, thickened and ovoid at base; stigmas 3.
