Type. Female holotype from Chiapas, Puebla Nueva Camp, Mexico [16°08’51.36’’N, 92°24’45.62’’W], 19.XI.1953, E. I. Schlinger ( CAS 9046686).

Etymology. The specific name is a patronym in honor of Evert Irving Schlinger, who collected the type specimen.

Diagnosis. The female of Tinus schlingeri sp. nov. resembles those of T. palictlus Carico, 1976 by the long lateral lobes (LL) ( Carico, 1976: 76, figs. 28, 29), but can be distinguished by the large and elongated scape-like projection of the middle field (MF) ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 4, 5 ).

Description. Female (Holotype, Chiapas, Mexico, CAS 9046686). Total length 19.28. Carapace, 8.11 long, 7.44 wide, light brown; fovea marked ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 2, 3 ). Clypeus light brown, with a median yellow spot, 0.74 high ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 2, 3 ). Anterior eye row straight, 1.55 wide; posterior recurved 2.44 wide ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 2, 3 ). Eye diameters, interdistances, and median ocular quadrangle: AME 0.24, ALE 0.21, PME 0.34, PLE 0.27; AME-AME 0.22, AME-ALE 0.18, PME-PME 0.40, PME-PLE 0.35, OQA 0.62, OQP 1.11, OQH 0.89. Chelicerae reddish-brown, bristly ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 2, 3 ); promargin and retromargin of fang furrow with three teeth equidistant and equal in size. Sternum yellow, bristly; 3.56 long, 3.73 wide. Labium dark brown, 1.49 long, 1.32 wide. Legs light brown, dark brown annuli from femora to tibia, relative length: II-IV-I-III, I—femur 12.23/ tibia-patella 15.42/ metatarsus 11.97/ tarsus 5.05/ total 44.67; II—13.43/ 15.69/ 12.36/ 5.18/ 46.66; III—10.77/ 12.63/ 9.57/ 4.38/ 37.35; IV—13.30/ 14.89/ 13.44/ 4.92/ 46.55. Ventral pairs of macrosetae on tibiae: I-4; II-4; III-3; IV- 3. Abdomen, 10.64 long, dark gray, bristly, anterior portion of dorsum with grouped dark brown bristles ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 2, 3 ). Venter light brown, scattered setae. Epigynum with large, wide and projected middle field (MF) ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 4, 5 ) and enlarged lateral lobes (LL) ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 4, 5 ). Spermathecae (S) short and rounded ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 4, 5 ) and coiled copulatory ducts (CD) ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 4, 5 ).

Distribution. Mexico ( Fig 1 View FIGURE 1 ).

Note. Tinus schlingeri sp. nov. was initially thought to be the female of Tinus oaxaca Carico, 2008 as both species were similar in size and colour pattern. However, close examination of the holotype of T. oaxaca revealed distinct differences in the colour pattern of carapace and abdomen. In the original description of T. oaxaca , the dorsal prosoma presents an uniformly brown median band ( Carico 2008), whereas T. schlingeri sp. nov. has a lighter and vivid pattern. Also, the dorsal femora and patellae of T. oaxaca have an “indistinct pattern” ( Carico 2008), but T. schlingeri sp. nov. presents distinct dark patches.

Also, the only known specimen of T. oaxaca was collected from Oaxaca , Mexico, which is about 470 km from where T. schlingeri sp. nov. was collected and in a different drainage basin ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ).
