Taxonomy. Peromyscus winkelmanni Carleton, 1977 View in CoL , 6: 3 mi (= 10- 1 km, by road) WSW Dos Aguas, 8000 ft (= 2438 m), Michoacan, Mexico.

Peromyscus winkelmanniis in the aztecus species group. Monotypic.

Distribution. Sierra Coalcoman in SW Michoacan and parts of Sierra Madre del Sur in Guerrero, Mexico. View Figure

Descriptive notes. Head-body 113-125 mm, tail 117-140 mm, ear 20-23 mm, hindfoot 25-29 mm; weight 44-55 g. The Coalcoman Deermouse is medium-sized, with tawny dorsum, mixed with black hairs, and black dorsal stripe or band apparent in some individuals. Sides, cheeks, and flanks are bright tan, giving cinnamon appearance. Prominent ocherous lateral line is present. Venter is white, but hairs are plumbeous at bases. Ocherous pectoral spot can be present. Hindfeet are white, but tarsal region is dark. Tail is bicolored (dark above and white below) and about equal to head-body length. The Coalcoman Deermouse has angular interorbital region that distinguishes members of the aztecus species group from members of the boylii species group.

Habitat. Mesic pine and pine-oak forests, preferring old growth forests with dense undergrowth dominated by mosses, lichens, orchids, epiphytes, and bromeliads at elevations of 2040-2438 m. The Coalcoman Deermouse typically occurs in areas with fallen logs and rocky outcroppings.
