Taxonomy. Peromyscus nicaraguae]. A. Allen, 1908 View in CoL , Matagalpa, Matagalpa, Nicaragua.
Peromyscus nicaraguae is in the mexicanus species group. It was initially described as a distinct species but later placed in synonomy with P. mexicanus saxitilis. Recent DNA studies suggest that parts of what historically have been recognized as P. m. saxitilis should be considered as P. nicaraguae or P. salvadorensis. Two former subspecies of P. nudipes (hesperus and orientalis ) should be assigned to P. nicaraguae . Monotypic.
Distribution. Honduras and Nicaragua. View Figure
