Taxonomy. Oxymycterus caparoae Hershkovitz, 1998 View in CoL , Arrozal, 2400 m, Parque Nacional do Caparao, Minas Gerais, Brazil. This species is monotypic.
Distribution. Known only from type locality and its vicinities in SE Brazil. View Figure
Descriptive notes. Head-body 110-139 mm, tail 80-104 mm, ear 18-20 mm, hindfoot 27-31 mm. No specific data are available for body weight. See general characters of the genus under the Amazonian Hocicudo ( O. amazonicus ) account. The Mount Caparao Hocicudo is a mediumsized species of Oxymycterus . Dorsal pelage is long, lax, and dark brown with blackish tips; side band is slightly more orange; venter is orange with slaty base; ears are dark brown; and hindfeet are covered dorsally by grayish brown hairs (gray basally and white apically).
Habitat. Cool humid grasslands at highest summits at elevations higher than 2100 m. The Mount Caparao Hocicudo can occur in dense cover of Andean bamboo.
