Acmaeodera conoidea Fall, 1899 View in CoL

( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1–4. 1–3 )

This species was described from “a small series” in the Horn Collection from Arizona, with no other collecting data and no mention of a type designation. However, oddly, Cazier (1940) remarked that the type was lost, but that three specimens from the type series were available in the Horn Collection at ANSP. Horn’s collection of Coleoptera was moved to MCZC in October, 1974 ( Bousquet 2012; Lawrence 1973). Nelson et al. (2008) listed the type depository as follows: “MCZC? ANSP 8193 (type is lost).” Bellamy (2008a) listed “ANSP 8193 Neotype needed.” Apparently both followed Cazier’s (1940) lead in thinking “the type ” to be lost. Two syntypes have been found at ANSP. We hereby designate as lectotype of Acmaeodera conoidea Fall, 1899 the specimen ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1–4. 1–3 ) measuring 5.8 mm and labeled as follows: a small square blank card // Ariz. [p, white] // Conoidea, Fall., type. [h] // TYPE [p] // Acmaeodera conoidea Fall , 8193 [h, red] // LECTOTYPE, Acmaeodera conoidea Fall , desig. Westcott & Bílý 2018 [p, red]. The second specimen, simply labeled “Ariz. [p]” as above, becomes a paralectotype, as we designate on blue card. In our opinion, the selection of a lectotype for this species is especially important in light of the fact that “the type ” was declared lost, and the species is considered to range from Arizona to Texas, is quite variable, and may be confused with others, notably Acmaeodera neoneglecta Fisher.
