The original description appeared in issue 9/10, dated 25 March 1919. There is an error in the number of specimens of the type series. Buresch (1919: 225) reported 3 ♂♂ and 7 ♀♀, while the specimens stored in the museum are 6 ♂♂ and 1 ♀. For stability of nomenclature and following Article 74 ( ICZN 1999) the male with identifier “NMNHS-INV-T-01034” is here designated as lectotype for Erebia gorge pirinica Buresch , 1919. The specimen was illustrated in the original publication by Buresch (1919: 224, Abbildung 11: Fig. 9 View FIGURES 3–10 ) and by Abadjiev (1995: Pl. XIV: Figs 11–12 View FIGURES 11–18 ). Originally described as (and valid) subspecies of Erebia gorge (Hübner, [1804]) , endemic for the alpine part of Pirin Mountains, Bulgaria .
