While working on the “Butterflies of Bulgaria ” series, the senior author received via Dr Martin Lödl photos of types of Colias caucasica balcanica , kept at the Naturhistorisches Museum, Wien (NHMW) and one of them was recently illustrated ( Abadjiev 1993: Pl. XVI: Fig. 8 View FIGURES 3–10 ). Just repeating the label, the same specimen was reported as “lectoholotype” ( Abadjiev 1992: 45). It is also illustrated in Rebel (1904: Tafel IV: Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1–2 ). Later Hesselbarth, van Oorschot & Wagener (1995: 328: footnote 1) stated: “Typenmaterial: Lectoholotypus ♀ …; design. Abadjiev (1992: 45) …”. It is necessary to stress upon the fact that the red label ending with “LECTOHOLOTYPUS ♀ ” and a des- ignation of a lectotype was never done. To avoid future confusions and for stability of nomenclature we think such a designation necessary and following Article 74 ( ICZN 1999) the same specimen is here designated as lectotype for Colias myrmidone balcanica Rebel, 1901 . Additional paralectotypes exist in the collections of Naturhistorisches Museum, Wien and the Natural History Museum, London ( Abadjiev 2002: 16). Treated as a different subspecies, Colias caucasica balcanica Rebel, 1901 ( Wagener 1990: 59) , endemic for the Balkans .
