ALBINARIA VS. View in CoL CRISTATARIA

Both the ITS1 & 2 and the 12S datasets provide convincing evidence that there is a monophyletic group of species, the Cristataria -clade, to which A. hedenborgi belongs. The Cypriot, Turkish and Greek Albinaria species form a separate clade, which can be defined by synapomorphic substitutions and additionally by a large deletion. The congruence between the datasets is best explained as a result of similar phylogenetic signal. Incongruence between trees derived from mitochondrial and nuclear DNA, respectively, has been attributed to either introgression of mtDNA or ancestral polymorphisms ( van Moorsel, Schilthuizen & Gittenberger, 2001b). These phenomena do not appear to have affected the 12S and ITS1 & 2 trees at the systematically higher level addressed in this study.
