(4) A. argentus View in CoL versus A. flavipes rubeculus Van Dyck

Pelage: A. argentus has pale olive-buff fur on the upper hind feet and tail base and drabber deep olive-buff fur on the rump; A. flavipes rubeculus has orange-toned fur on the upper hind feet and tail base and richer orange-red tonings on the rump.

External measurements: A. argentus is smaller than A. flavipes rubeculus in absolute measurement for a range of external body characters, as follows: wt, hb and hf in both males and females (see Table 4).

Dentary: Antechinus argentus is smaller than A. flavipes rubeculus in absolute measurement for a range of dentary characters, as follows: females—BL, Dent, IOW, IPV, M 2 W, OBW, R-LC 1, R-LM 1 T, ZW, HT, PL, SWR- LC 1 B, UML, HT-B, LML, M 2 W, and in males—BL, Dent, IPV, M 2 W, NW, R-LC 1, R-LM 1, R-LM 1 T, PL, SWR- LC 1 B, UML, LML and M 2 W. A further 5 variables significantly (p<0.05) differ between males of the two species and 3 variables differ between females (Table 4).

Other Comments: A. argentus occurs in south-east Qld at Kroombit Tops NP, whereas A. flavipes rubeculus is only found in the wet tropics of north-east Qld. Genetics: Uncorrected pairwise range differences at the mitochondrial gene CytB between A. argentus and A. flavipes rubeculus are 9.0–10.2%.
