REMARKS

Herbarium and types of Backer are at PAS and BO ( Stafleu & Cowan 1976). The herbarium of PAS is on permanent loan at BO. The lectotype sheet at K has been received from “Hort. Bot. Bog[or]”. There may exist more type material at BO, but there was no response to our inquiry.

According to Cheesman (1948b) the name is synonymous with M.balbisiana Colla , but we consider it should be treated as a variant of it.A new combination is proposed: M.balbisiana Colla var. brachycarpa (Backer) Häkkinen , comb. nov. Basionym: Musa brachycarpa Backer View in CoL , Flora van Java Alf. 3: 135 (1924).
