REMARKS
According to Jarret (1986) this name is synonymous to M. balbisiana Colla , based on comparison of enzyme polymorphisms. In our opinion they are related, and the taxon of Matsumoto should be treated as a variety of M. balbisiana . We propose a new combination: M. balbisiana Colla var. liukiuensis (Matsum.) Häkkinen , comb. nov. Basionym: Musa sapientum L. var. liukiuensis Matsum. View in CoL , Botanical Magazine (Tokyo) 9: 69 (1897).
