Genus Brignoliolus Ovchinnikov, 1999 stat. rev.

Brignoliolus Ovchinnikov, 1999: 74 (as a subgenus of Coelotes Blackwall, 1841 View in CoL ).

Type species. Coelotes turkestanicus Ovchinnikov, 1999 View in CoL by original designation.

Diagnosis. Predominantly medium-sized (body length mostly 5–10 mm) pale-colored coelotine spiders with an elongate apical segment of the posterior lateral spinnerets. Brignoliolus differs from Coelotes by a lighter overall colouration and a longer and thinner apical segment of the posterior lateral spinnerets that 3–5 times as long as wide, and 1.15–1.6 times longer than preceding segment (vs. respectively 2–2.5 times, and nearly equal in length to the latter in Coelotes ; Figs 12–14 View FIGURES 9–14 , 28, 30 View FIGURES 28–30 ; Fomichev 2021, fig. 1C cf. Fig. 8 View FIGURES 1–8 ; Murphy & Roberts 2015, p. 282, pl. 85), as well as by the distinctive shape of the epigyne with long to very long teeth located anteriorly (vs. laterally) from the anterior margin of the fovea, and with trapezoidal or sandglass fovea (vs. rectangular) (please refre to figures see relatively Figs 6 View FIGURES 1–8 and 9, 10 View FIGURES 9–14 , 25 View FIGURES 24–27 , 29 View FIGURES 28–30 ). Additionally, the species of Coelotes which are related to the generotype, C. atropos (Walckenaer, 1830) possess the well-defined colulus, while in Brignoliolus spp. the colulus is poorly discernible ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 1–8 cf. Figs 14 View FIGURES 9–14 , 30 View FIGURES 28–30 ).

Note. The principal structure of the male palp in Brignoliolus is indistinguishable from that in Coelotes ( Figs 2–4 View FIGURES 1–8 cf. Figs 16–23 View FIGURES 15–20 View FIGURES 21–23 ).

Description. See Ovchinnikov (1999).

Composition. Brignoliolus arganoi ( Brignoli, 1978) comb. nov.; B. caudatus (de Blauwe, 1973) comb. nov.; B. charitonovi ( Spassky, 1939) comb. nov.; B. coenobita ( Brignoli, 1978) comb. nov.; B. juglandicola ( Ovchinnikov, 1984) comb. nov.; B. nenilini ( Ovchinnikov, 1999) comb. nov.; B. ovchinnikovi sp. nov.; B. turkestanicus ( Ovchinnikov, 1999) comb. nov.; B. vignai ( Brignoli, 1978) comb. nov.

Distribution. From northwestern Anatolia ( Turkey) to the Tarbagatai Mountains ( Kazakhstan), and from the Orenburg steppes ( Russia) in the north to the Upper Galilee ( Israel) in the south ( Ovchinnikov 1999; Mikhailov 2022; Nentwig et al. 2024).

Distribution of some species and their type localities are incorrectly shown in Wang & Zhu (2009) and therefore we are providing a map showing all distributional records of all species of the genus.
