Material examined. ARGENTINA: Jujuy province, La Quiaca, Aº Toro Ara, 21–28/X/2007, S. A. Konopko coll. (10 dissected eggs, 6 instars I, 8 instars II, 10 instars III, 10 instars IV, 10 instars V).

Egg ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ). Eggs were dissected from gravid females containing 15– 18 eggs each. EL: 0.79–0.87 mm. EW: 0.47–0.57 mm. Shape elongate oval, EL/EW: 1.43–1.75, flattened at one side, with a very short stalk ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ). Colour yellow, micropylar process and stalk transparent. Surface ornamented by irregular interlocking hexagons, with rounded structures on them.

First instar ( Figs. 2, 8 View FIGURES 1 – 9 , 12, 16 View FIGURES 10 – 21 , 22–23 View FIGURES 22 – 24 , 25–26 View FIGURES 25 – 26 ). Colour. Ground colour brown with dark markings. Head brown with dark markings, except ecdysial line and ventral and lateral surfaces testaceous. Eyes reddish brown. Rostrum testaceous. Antennae testaceous with pale setae. Pronotum brown with paired medial dark markings; mesonotum brown with paired dark markings along anterior margin and paired medial dark markings interrupted each one with a pale area; metanotum with paired dark markings along anterior margin, interrupted each one with a pale area and paired medial dark markings. Thoracic pleurae and sterna testaceous. Legs testaceous, except meso- and metatarsus apically and claws of the metalegs darker. Abdominal terga brown with dark markings; scent glands reddish brown on segments IV and V; abdominal sternites testaceous, except last segment with a rounded, middle, dark area. Connexivum brown with dark markings on posterior margin of each segment.

Body. Suboval, BL/BW: 1.18 ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ). Measurements that characterize the body shape are shown in Table 1.

Head. Short, subrectangular, HL/HW: 0.27; anterior margin rounded; Y-shaped ecdysial line visible; with trichobothria, and long stout and short slender setae in frontal view. S/eW: 2.11. OI: 2.35. HW/BL: 0.63. Rostrum short, with three transverse sulcations. Antenna: AL/BL: 0.16; 2-segmented; segment II longer than segment I, A1:A2= 0.46:1.00; A1 subconical; A2 subcylindrical; A2 width/length: 0.36; A1, A2 dorsal surfaces and A1 ventral surface bare; A2 ventral surface with a set of short slender spines and 2 short stiff spines on apical half ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 10 – 21 ).

Thorax. Pronotum subrectangular and short, anterior margin slightly concave, lateral margins convex, and posterior margin straight at middle. Mesonotum: posterior margin convex at middle ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ). Metanotum: posterior margin straight at middle ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ). Ecdysial line visible on pro-, meso-, and metanotum (not illustrated). Thoracic terga with few short slender setae; meso- and metanotum with 1 lateral spine on both sides of each segment ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ). PL/BL: 0.28. Pro-, meso-, and metasternum posterior margin convex at middle. Thoracic sterna with few short slender setae. Meso- and metathoracic spiracles small and rounded, located ventrally, near posterior margin of each segment. Meso- and metathoracic wing pads absent. Anterior legs short, L1/BL: 0.50; femur shorter than tibiotarsus, FE1/ TITA: 0.62 ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 10 – 21 ). Procoxa short, subconical; anterior surface with 2 short slender basal setae; anterodorsal surface with chloride cells; posterior surface with few short slender setae. Protrochanter short; anterior surface with five short setae and 3 basal campaniform sensilla; anteroventral surface with 1 short slender seta; posterior surface with 2 basal campaniform sensilla; posteroventral surface with 3 short slender spines. Profemur short, stout and subrectangular; anterior surface with 9 short and long spines; anterodorsal surface with 5 spines (the two apical ones longest), 3 short setae, 1 long slender seta and chloride cells; anteroventral surface with 1 long slender apical spine and chloride cells. Tibiotarsus elongate, TITA width/length: 0.31; anterior surface with 7 long setae in dorsal, 18 setae in upper and 11 bristles in lower rows, tibial comb represented by 2 spines (1 short and 1 long), and 1 long spine behind the tibial comb; anterodorsal surface with 4 (2+2) short spines; anteroventral surface with 2 short spines; inner surface with 14 slender setae (not illustrated); posterior surface with some long slender setae. One short slender and falcate claw. Mesolegs long and slender; L2/BL: 1.08; femur longest, tarsus longer than tibia; FE:TI:TA=1.00:0.52:0.59 ( Figs. 22–23 View FIGURES 22 – 24 ). Mesocoxa short, subconical; anterior surface with 3 short and 2 long spines; anterodorsal surface with chloride cells; posterior surface bare. Mesotrochanter short; anterior surface with 3 basal campaniform sensilla, 2 short basal setae and 5 long slender spines; posterior surface with 2 basal campaniform sensilla. Mesofemur subcylindrical; anterodorsal surface with 10 spines (the 2 apical ones longest) and chloride cells; anteroventral surface with 8 spines and chloride cells; posterodorsal surface with 7 short slender setae and 1 apical spine; posteroventral surface with 15 short and long spines. Mesotibia subcylindrical, straight; anterior surface with a row of 5 spines; anterodorsal surface with 2 long slender spines (1 basal, 1 apical); anteroventral surface with 6 spines; posterior surface with 6 spines; posterodorsal surface with 7 long slender setae and 1 short spine; posteroventral surface with 2 short spines and tibial comb represented by only 1 long slender spine; dorsal surface with 2 short spines. Mesotarsus subcylindrical, straight; anterodorsal surface with 3 spines; anteroventral surface with 10 spines; posterior surface with 7 spines; posterodorsal surface with 8 long slender setae and 4 short spines. Two long slender falcate claws of different length. TA2/CL1: 0.91; TA2/CL2: 0.86. Metalegs: long, slender; L3/BL: 1.29; tarsus longest, tibia shorter than femur; FE:TI:TA=0.69:0.59:1.00 ( Figs. 25–26 View FIGURES 25 – 26 ). Metacoxa large, subconical; anterior surface with few short and long slender spines; anterodorsal surface with chloride cells; posterior surface with 1 short seta. Metatrochanter short; anterior surface with 2 short basal setae and 3 basal campaniform sensilla; anteroventral surface with 2 long slender spines; posteroventral surface with 2 short setae. Metafemur slightly curved and flattened anteroposteriorly; anterior surface with 10 short spines in 2 areas (upper, 4; lower, 6); anterodorsal surface with 8 spines, and chloride cells; anteroventral surface with chloride cells; posterodorsal surface with 2 short slender setae and 2 short apical spines; posteroventral surface with 10 short spines and 4 short slender setae. Metatibia subcylindrical, straight, TI3 width/length: 0.29; anterodorsal surface with 5 spines and 1 long slender setae in the apical third; anteroventral surface with 9 spines (the apical longest); posterior surface with 7 spines and 6 long slender setae; posterodorsal surface with 8 spines (the apical longest) and 1 long slender seta; posteroventral surface with 6 short spines and tibial comb of 2 long slender spines. Metatarsus slightly curved and flattened anteroposteriorly; TA3 width/length: 0.16; anterior surface with 9 spines (1 short and 8 long); anteroventral surface with 20 swimming hairs; posterodorsal surface with 15 spines (the apical longest), 28 swimming hairs and 5 short slender setae; posteroventral surface with 17 short spines. Two long slender straight claws of different length. TA3/CL1: 2.44; TA3/CL2: 2.32.

Abdomen. Ecdysial line visible on segments I and II (not illustrated). Posterior margin of: segment I, convex dorsally and ventrally; segment II, straight dorsally and ventrally; segment III, straight dorsally and concave ventrally; segments IV–VII, concave dorsally and ventrally; segment VIII, straight dorsally and ventrally ( Figs. 2, 8 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ). Segment III, only the two scent gland openings are distinct; segments IV–V, the beanshaped scent glands and their openings are distinct ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ). G3/D3: 8, G4/D4: 9, G5/D5: 7. Spiracles visible on segments I–VIII, small and rounded, located ventrally near posterior margin of each segment, except the ones on segment I which are near the anterior margin. Terga with few short slender setae, and chloride cells. Lateral spines of the abdominal segments on right and left sides: I, 0; II–III, 1 short; IV, 2 short, 1 long; V– VII, 3 short, 1 long; VIII, 3 short, 5 long ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ). Sterna with few short slender setae, and chloride cells. Central spines of urosternites: I–III, 0; IV, 3 short; V, 4 short; VI, 2 short, 2 long; VII–VIII, 2 long ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ).

Second instar ( Figs. 3, 9 View FIGURES 1 – 9 , 13, 17 View FIGURES 10 – 21 ). Similar to first instar except for the following features:

Colour. With dark markings on pronotum, anterior margin of mesonotum and on the middle of metanotum, all interrupted with a medial pale area. Claws of the anterior legs darker.

Body. BL/BW: 1.28–1.36 ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ). Measurements that characterize the body shape are shown in Table 1.

Head. HL/HW: 0.36–0.44; with chloride cells in frontal view; S/eW: 1.38–1.41. OI: 1.20–1.58. HW/BL: 0.57–0.63. Rostrum with four transverse sulcations. Antenna: AL/BL: 0.14–0.15; A1:A2= 0.25–0.29:1.00; A2 width/length: 0.31–0.32 ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 10 – 21 ).

Thorax. Metanotum with chloride cells in paired medial areas on both sides of the segment. Thoracic terga and sterna with shorter and slender setae than on previous instar. PL/BL: 0.27–0.29. Mesothoracic wing pads present and metathoracic ones absent; mesothoracic wing pads little more than half of pterothorax length along midline ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ). Anterior legs, L1/BL: 0.43–0.47; FE1/ TITA: 0.70–0.80 ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 10 – 21 ). Procoxa: anterior surface with some short slender setae; anterodorsal surface without chloride cells. Protrochanter: anterior and posterior surfaces with some short slender setae; posteroventral surface with 2 slender spines. Profemur: anterodorsal surface with 5 spines similar in size and some short slender basal setae; anteroventral and posterior surfaces with few short slender basal setae. Mesotibia: posterodorsal surface with 15 long slender setae and 2 short spines; posteroventral surface with 9 short spines (the apical longest), and tibial comb of 3 spines. Mesotarsus: anteroventral surface with 7 spines; posterior surface with 6 spines (1 apical); posterodorsal surface with 17 long slender setae. TA2/CL1: 0.94–0.97; TA2/CL2: 0.93. Metalegs L3/BL: 1.19–1.27; FE:TI:TA=0.70–0.73:0.61–0.63:1.00. Metacoxa: anterodorsal surface without chloride cells; posterior surface with 2 short spines (1 apical). Metatrochanter: posterior surface with 3 basal campaniform sensilla and 4 short setae (2 basal). Metafemur: anterior surface with 12 short spines in 2 areas (upper, 4; lower, 8); anterodorsal surface with 9 spines; posteroventral surface with 11 short spines and 7 short slender setae. Metatibia TI3 width/length: 0.26–0.28; anteroventral surface with 12 spines; posterior surface with 8 spines and 10 long slender setae; posteroventral surface with 6 spines (4 short and 2 long, the apical longest), and tibial comb of 2 slender spines (1 short and 1 long). Metatarsus TA3 width/length: 0.13–0.15; anterior surface with 7 spines; anteroventral surface with 19 spines and 40 swimming hairs; posterodorsal surface with 9 short slender setae and 57 swimming hairs; posteroventral surface with 19 short spines. TA3/CL1: 3.85– 4.17; TA3/CL2: 3.57–4.17.

Abdomen. Posterior margin of: segment I, straight dorsally and ventrally; segment II, slightly concave ventrally; segment III, slightly concave dorsally ( Figs. 3, 9 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ). G3/D3: 6–8, G4/D4: 12–14, G5/D5: 11–12. Terga with abundant short slender setae, and chloride cells. Colour. Mesotibia basally, claws of the mesolegs apically, metatibia basally and apically darker.

Body. Elongate, BL/BW: 0.36–0.39 ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ). Measurements that characterize the body shape are shown in Table 1.

Head. HL/HW: 0.86–0.98; posterior margin with a middle small notch. S/eW: 1.43–1.63. OI: 1.88–2.32. HW/BL: 0.50–0.52. Rostrum with five transverse sulcations. Antenna AL/BL: 0.15–0.16; A1:A2= 0.33– 0.37:1.00; A1 with a lateral protuberance; A2 width/length: 0.21–0.36; A1 and A2 dorsal surfaces with long slender setae; A2 ventral surface with 4 short stiff spines on apical half, and ventral margin with long slender setae on apical half ( Figs. 10, 14 View FIGURES 10 – 21 ).

Thorax. Pronotum totally hidden by head; posterior half with short slender setae; posterior margin with long slender setae (not exposed). Meso- and metathoracic wing pads present. Meso-, metathoracic wing pads and anterior half of mesonotum with abundant short slender setae; metanotum with abundant but more scattered short slender setae than on mesonotum; posterior margin of setose area of mesonotum and internal margins of wing pads with short (as in Fig. 6 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ) and long (as in Fig. 7 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ) lanceolate setae, respectively; external margin of wing pads with long slender setae ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ). Abdomen. Posterior margin of segment I slightly convex dorsally ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ). Scent gland openings of segment III more reduced than in previous instar. G3/D3: 6–8, G4/D4: 12–17, G5/D5: 11–17. Spiracles of segment I larger than rest of spiracles; spiracles of segments II–VIII located ventrally near anterior margin of each segment. Terga with more chloride cells than previous instar. Lateral spines of the abdominal segments on right/left sides: I, 0/0; II–III, 1/1 short; IV, 5/6 short, 2/2 long; V, 7/7 short, 2/3 long; VI, 5/5 short, 4/3 long; VII, 9/7 short, 2/3 long; VIII, 7/7 short, 7/7 long ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ). Sterna without chloride cells. Central spines of urosternites: IV–V, 2 short; VI–VIII, 2 long.

Fourth instar ( Figs. 5 View FIGURES 1 – 9 , 19–20 View FIGURES 10 – 21 ). Similar to third instar except for the following features:

Antenna: AL/BL: 0.15–0.17; A1:A2= 0.28–0.38:1.00; A2 width/length: 0.28–0.30; A2 dorsal surface with abundant long slender setae; A2 ventral surface with 6 short, stiff spines on apical half.

Thorax. Mesonotum: short lanceolate setae on posterior margin of setose area more extended medially than on previous instar ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ). PL/BL: 0.28–0.29. Mesothoracic wing pads reaching anterior half of urotergite I; metathoracic wing pads reaching anterior margin of the urotergite II ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ). Anterior legs L1/ BL: 0.40–0.43; FE1/ TITA: 0.74–0.75 ( Figs. 19–20 View FIGURES 10 – 21 ). Protrochanter: anterior surface with 4 basal campaniform sensilla. Profemur: anterior surface with 21 short and long spines; posteroventral surface with 34 short spines. Tibiotarsus: TITA width/length: 0.28–0.31; anterior surface with 8 long setae in dorsal, 25 setae in upper, and 16 bristles in lower rows, tibial comb represented by 4 spines (2 long and 2 short); inner surface with 48 slender setae (not illustrated). Metatibia: TI3 width/length: 0.23–0.24; anterodorsal surface with a row of 8 short spines; anteroventral surface with a row of 18 short spines, and 26 long slender setae; posterior surface with a row of 27 long slender setae and 3 short slender setae; posterodorsal surface with 16 spines and 9 short slender setae; posteroventral surface with a tibial comb of 6 spines. Metatarsus: TA3 width/length: 0.14–0.15; anteroventral surface with 25 spines and 231 swimming hairs; posterodorsal surface with 24 spines, 10 short slender setae and 280 swimming hairs. TA3/CL1: 7.70–8.33; TA3/CL2: 7.14–8.33.

Abdomen. Scent gland openings of segment III not distinct. G4/D4 and G5/D5: 11. Lateral spines of abdominal segments on right/left sides: I, 0/0; II–III, 1/1 short; IV, 5/5 short, 2/2 long; V, 7/7 short, 2/3 long; VI, 6/6 short, 3/4 long; VII, 7/6 short, 5/5 long; VIII, 8/8 short, 7/7 long. Urosternites IV–VIII without central spines.

Fifth instar ( Figs. 6–7 View FIGURES 1 – 9 , 11, 15, 21 View FIGURES 10 – 21 , 24 View FIGURES 22 – 24 , 29–30 View FIGURES 27 – 30 ). Similar to fourth instar except for the following features:

Colour. Posterior margin of mesonotum and metathoracic wing pads darker.

Body. More elongate than previous instar. BL/BW: 1.85–1.99. Measurements that characterize the body shape are shown in Table 1.

Head. HL/HW: 0.34–0.36. S/eW: 1.35–1.39. OI: 1.46–1.59. HW/BL: 0.43–0.45; with more chloride cells in frontal view than on previous instar. Rostrum with seven transverse sulcations. Antenna: AL/BL: 0.14– 0.15; A1:A2= 0.27–0.31:1.00; A2 width/length: 0.22–0.25; A2 ventral surface with 10 short stiff spines on apical half and ventral margin with abundant long slender setae ( Figs. 11, 15 View FIGURES 10 – 21 ).

Thorax. Mesonotum: short lanceolate setae ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ) on posterior margin of setose area reaching anterior margin of metanotum medially. PL/BL: 0.30–0.31. Meso- and metathoracic wing pads with long lanceolate setae at posterior margins ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ). Mesothoracic wing pads reaching anterior margin of urotergite II; metathoracic wing pads reaching anterior half of urotergite III. Anterior legs L1/BL: 0.37–0.39; FE1/ TITA: 0.74–0.80 ( Fig. 21 View FIGURES 10 – 21 ). Protrochanter: anterior surface with 6 basal campaniform sensilla. Profemur: anterior surface with 32 short and long spines; posteroventral surface with shorter spines than previous instar. Tibiotarsus: TITA width/length: 0.26–0.33; anterior surface with 7–8 long setae in dorsal, 28–31 setae in upper and 15–17 bristles in lower rows, tibial comb represented by 5 spines (2 long and 3 short); inner surface with 66 slender setae (not illustrated). Mesotibia: anterior surface with a row of 7 short and long spines; anteroventral surface with 11–14 spines; posterior surface with 7 spines; posterodorsal surface with 48 long slender setae; posteroventral surface with 32 short spines, 4 short slender setae basally and tibial comb of 4–5 spines. Mesotarsus: anteroventral surface with 12 spines; posterodorsal surface with 4 short spines and 57 long slender setae. TA2/CL1: 0.93–1.00; TA2/CL2: 0.89–0.97. Metalegs: L3/BL: 0.99–1.02; Fe:Ti:Ta=0.65–0.71:0.64–0.66:1.00 ( Figs. 29–30 View FIGURES 27 – 30 ). Metafemur: anterior surface with 50 short spines in 3 areas (upper, 28; middle, 11; lower, 11); anterodorsal surface with 7 spines; ventral surface with 11 long slender setae distally. Metatibia TI3 width/length: 0.22– 0.25; anterodorsal surface with a row of 11 spines; anteroventral surface with 30 short and long spines and 32 long slender setae; posterior surface with a row of 38 long slender setae; posterodorsal surface with 17 spines, 5 long slender setae; tibial comb of 8 spines. Metatarsus: TA3 width/length: 0.17–0.18; anteroventral surface with 23 spines and 420 swimming hairs; posterodorsal surface with 32 spines and 630 swimming hairs; posteroventral surface with 42 spines. TA3/CL1: 10.00–11.11; TA3/CL2: 9.10–10.00.
