The Drymeia brumalis species group

In the Drymeia brumalis species group I tentatively include two European species: Drymeia brumalis (Rondani) and D. pyrenaea sp. nov. described below. However, it is very likely that a future revision of the world fauna of Drymeia will warrant the inclusion of further species.

Diagnosis. The following combination of characters distinguishes species of the D. brumalis species group from other European species of Drymeia : Modest-sized, wing length 3.9–5.4mm. Arista relatively thick at base, yet longest pubescence of arista same length as or longer than its greatest basal diameter. Proboscis short but slender: haustellum barely thicker than fore tibia, prementum decidedly shorter than fore tarsomere 1 and labella small. Eye bare. Male with shortest distance between eyes less than distance between outer margins of posterior ocelli. Female frontal vitta with a pair of crossed setae. Parafacial on upper, broadest part barely exceeding width of postpedicel. Facial edge not or only just projecting in front of fronto-parafacial angle. Face without a distinct interantennal convexity or crest. Notopleuron, besides two setae, with several setulae in male and with 0–2 setulae in female. Dorsocentral setae 2 + 3. Anepimeron and katepimeron without setulae. Fore tarsus, especially in female, with ventral setulae and sensilla notably long and outstanding. Male fore tarsomere 1 without pointed apico-ventral process. Hind tibia with apical pv-seta. Hind tarsomere 1 with short v-seta near base. Male abdomen without setulae on sternite I.
