Amphilophium inclui 47 espécies distribuídas do México à Argentina e na Mata Atlântica brasileira. O gênero pode ser reconhecido pelas gavinhas trífidas a multífida terminadas em discos adesivos, cálice cupular, coriáceo, geralmente dobrado na porção superior dando a impressão de ser duplo, densamente pubescente, e sementes com testa pubescente ( Lohmann & Taylor 2014). Na Paraíba está representado por duas espécies que ocorrem em Caatinga e Mata Atlântica (incluindo brejos de altitude e restinga).
