Colobothea fikaceki View in CoL sp. nov. ( Figure 1 View FIGURE 1 )

Type locality. Ecuador, Napo, 2.4 km SW of Diaz de Pineda, 00°19’10”S 77°45’33”W, 1560m a. s. l.

Holotype female. Integument predominantly brown: head light brown; apex of scape, pedicel and antennomeres, apical half of femora and ventral body dark-brown. Head. Frons rectangular, longer than wide; slightly convex, almost flat in lateral view; finely punctate; setae on frons thin and short, yellowish; with a stripe of yellow setae around the coronal suture (distinctly more evident between ocular lobes and fading toward clypeus); laterally, with a strong stripe of yellow setae from antennal tubercles to clypeus. On each side, with a longitudinal band of yellowish-white setae behind the eyes, almost as large as lower ocular lobe and distinctly denser near ocular lobe. Upper ocular lobes height almost three times narrower than lower ocular lobe; distance between them about same width of upper lobe. Genae almost parallel, slightly convergent toward apex; with a long and erect dark brown seta below lower ocular lobe. Clypeus, labrum, and lateral base of mandibles with sparse long and erect dark brown setae across. Antennae reaching elytral apex approximately at base of antennomere IX. Scape covered with sparse and short yellowish-white setae, slightly denser on median region of outer face. Pedicel uniformly covered with sparse white setae. Antennomeres III–IX predominantly covered with short and dark-brown setae, with a thick and acute row of setae around apex; antennomeres IV and VI with a ring of white setae near basal half; antennomere III length, 1.6 times shorter than scape; antennomeres III–XI gradually decreasing in length. Thorax. Prothorax almost 1.3 times longer than wide; covered with short dark-brown setae. Disc of pronotum with a faint longitudinal stripe of yellowish-white setae at mid-line; on each side, a dense longitudinal stripe of yellow setae; with irregular coarse punctation near posterior margin. Sides of prothorax with two stripes of yellowish setae, which start on anterior margin and converge toward posterior margin reaching each other approximately at distal third. Prosternum uniformly covered with dense yellow setae. Mesosternum mainly covered with sparse yellow setae, with a dense band of yellow setae around mesocoxa. Metasternum with a triangle-like dense macula of yellow setae on median region; metepimeron with a dense longitudinal band of yellow setae. Scutellum subtriangular; with a slight longitudinal sulcus at median region; apical margin bilobed; densely covered with dark-brown setae. Elytra. Almost straight at basal third and convex apically; with coarse punctation irregularly distributed, denser at basal region; basalcrests slightly raised, with short erect dark brown setae; elytral suture bordered by a row of short erect dark brown setae. Humeri rounded, slightly projected laterally; humeral carina raised, straight, extending longitudinally toward apex of elytra. Elytral background covered with sparse, short and yellowish-gray setae, except on: elytral base, with a triangular macula of dark-brown setae near scutellum; over basal-crests, with an oval dark-brown macula surrounded by dense line of yellow setae; with a dense spot of yellow setae on humeri; basal half with a large macula of dark-brown setae surrounded by dense line of yellow setae reaching epipleural margin; below that macula, a postmedian zigzag macula of dark-brown setae surrounded by yellow setae; with a line of yellow setae connecting that two maculae at epipleura; apically, with a large macula of dark-brown setae surrounded by yellow setae (except near lateral margin of elytra). Apex of elytra concave; inner angle rounded and outer angle with an acuminate spine. Legs. Femora mainly covered with sparse setae, with denser areas of yellowish-white setae forming well-defined bands at distal half. Tibiae with a ring of yellowish-white setae on distal half; after that ring, with dense coarse dark-brown setae; tarsomeres I densely covered with yellowish-white setae. Abdomen. Densely covered with short dark-brown setae; sternite I almost as long as length of sternites III and IV together; with a dense triangular macula of yellow setae on median region; sternites II– IV, on each side, with a dense trapezoidal macula on median region and a dense band of yellow setae near anterior margin; sternite V longer than wide; conic and slight concave; apical margin truncate, with a slight spine at outer apical angle; with a transversal band of yellowish-white setae near anterior margin, slightly triangle-like at midline; with several erect and long dark-brown setae near apex; tergite VIII slightly shorter than sternite V; apical margin truncate, with lateral apex rounded; with a longitudinal band of yellowish-white setae on lateral margin, decreasing in width toward apex; with a spot of yellow setae on median region, near apical margin; with several erect and long dark-brown setae near apex.

Measurements (mm). Total length, 13.8; length of prothorax at center, 2.8; anterior width of prothorax, 3.0; posterior width of prothorax, 3.3; humeral width, 4.4; elytral length, 9.2.

Etymology. This species is dedicated to Dr. Martin Fikáček, expert on Hydrophiloidea and curator of the collection in the Department of Entomology of the NMPC. Dr. Fikáček was one of the collectors of the material.

Distribution. This species is known only from the type locality in the Napo Province, Ecuador.

Discussion. Colobothea fikaceki sp. nov. can be diagnosed by the following combination of characters: antennomeres IV and VI with a ring of white setae near basal half; prothorax conic, with a pair of longitudinal stripes of yellow setae on the disc of pronotum; humeri wider than prothorax, projected laterally; and oval dark-brown macula surrounded by yellow setae over basal-crests. This oval macula over basal crests is the most remarkable characteristic that differentiates C. fikaceki sp. nov. from all other known species of Colobothea .

Colobothea fikaceki sp. nov. is closely related to C. septemmaculata Zajciw, 1971 and C. peruviana Aurivillius, 1920 . The new species differs from C. septemmaculata mainly by the shape of the postmedian maculae on the elytra, which is almost rounded in C. septemmaculata , while in C. fikaceki sp. nov. it resembles a zigzag shape. From C. peruviana , the new species differs by the longitudinal stripes of yellow setae on the disc of pronotum (which are parallel in the new species and divergent toward apex in C. peruviana ), by the humeri laterally projected, and by the presence of yellow setae surrounding the dark-brown maculae on elytra.
