Valid name: Nyctiellus lepidus (Gervais, 1837)

Referred specimen (marked with type *): ZMB 2829 , body in alcohol, skull extracted; Cabo Cruz, Cuba; collected by J. Gundlach.

Comment: Gundlach (1877: 32) found the first specimens of this new species in 1839 on [coffee plantation] San Antonio el Fundador, Canimar, Matanzas, Cuba. The next specimen of Vespertilio barbatus was not recorded until 1857 near Cabo Cruz. Thus ZMB 2829 from Cabo Cruz cannot be a type specimen. ZMB 2829 was also wrongly labelled as 2828, according to the catalogue entry ZMB 2828 is “ Vesperus dutertreus ” Gervais .
