Phyllostoma ( Artibeus ?) albomaculatum Gundlach, 1861
Gundlach, J. (1861) In Peters: Eine Übersicht der von Herrn Dr. Gundlach beobachteten Flederthiere auf Cuba. Monatsberichte der Königlich Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin, 1861: 155 [149–157].
Valid name: Phyllops falcatus (Gray, 1839)
Syntypes: ZMB 2799 View Materials , body in alcohol, skull not extracted, female, adult . ZMB 2868 View Materials , skin, skull not extracted . ZMB 3077 View Materials , body in alcohol, skull extracted, male adult. All specimens either from Fundador, or Cardenas, Cuba; collected by J. Gundlach.
Comment: The original description (Gundlach 1861: 155) contains measurements of one specimen only. Unfortunately we cannot confirm that Gundlach examined more than one specimen, due to lack of additional information. The description is annotated by Peters: “of this species no specimen is present [in the museum at time of publication]...”. On the other hand in the general catalogue both specimens ZMB 2799 View Materials and ZMB 3077 View Materials were marked by Peters with a type asterisk. These specimens were sent to ZMB by Gundlach after the description was published, and were taken to Germany by Mr. Sezekorn. Peters’ type marking in the catalogue was most probably based on personal information from Gundlach or Sezekorn, therefore we assume that the specimens are syntypes . ZMB 2868 View Materials has the same locality and collector data as the specimens mentioned above, and presumably represent an additional syntype .
