Peters, W.C.H.

Valid name: Sphaeronycteris toxophyllum Peters, 1882

Holotype: ZMB 5984 View Materials , body in alcohol, skull extracted (missing), female, adult with pullus; “tropical America”; collector unknown, “im Handel erhalten” [purchased].

Comment: The restriction of the type locality by Cabrera (1958: 92) to “Pebas, Dept. Loreto, Peru ”, as the first exact locality where the species was recorded from in 1900 is unjustified. Carter & Dolan (1978: 66) erroneously gave the catalogue number for this specimen as ZMB 598, although they refer to Peters (1882) mentioning the number 5984 in his description. Peters (1882) noted the specimen was a pregnant female with a male embryo. A skull labelled: “A 54.00, Venezuela, Briceno, 19. XII. 1900 ” was later added to the holotype (ZMB 5984), however, A 54.00 is not part of the type specimen.
