Peters, W.C.H. (1866) Über einige neue oder weniger bekannte Flederthiere. Monatsberichte der Königlich Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin, 1866: 17 [16–25].

Nomen novum for R. clivosus Blasius 1857 , Naturgeschichte der Säugethiere Deutschlands: 33, nec clivosus Cretzschmar.

Valid name: Rhinolophus blasii Peters, 1866

Syntype: ZMB 557 View Materials , body in alcohol, skull not extracted, male; Trieste , Istria, Italy; collected and donated by Blasius .

Comment: Blasius (1857) provided no details on the number of specimens examined. One further syntype specimen from “Mailand” (= Milan, Italy) is deposited in the Staatliches Naturhistorisches Museum Braunschweig (N 39345). The type localities were specified by Blasius (1857: 34) in N-Italy, Turin, Milan, Lake Garda, Central Italy, Sicily, Istria, and “Dalmatien” (part of Croatia). Benda et al. (2006: 82, footnote) suggested to restrict the type localities to the origin of the available type material [Milan and Trieste, Italy], although they indicated that in both areas the species seems to be presently extinct.
