Pteropus (Spectrum) voeltzkowi Matschie, 1909 View in CoL

Matschie, P. (1909) Eine Art der Gattung Pteropus von der Insel Pemba. Sitzungsberichte der Gesellschaft naturforschender Freunde Berlin, 1909: 486 [482–486].

Valid name: Pteropus voeltzkowi Matschie, 1909

Holotype (by original designation): No inventory number (see comment below), skin and skull (nearly all teeth loose), male, adult; Fufuni, SE-Pemba Id., Tanzania; collected by Voeltzkow, 17 March 1903.

Paratypes: Uncatalogued skins from alcohol (after 1907, five specimens), catalogued skulls (after 1907, only four specimens) - nearly all the teeth are lost from their alveoli - females, adult; Fufuni, SE-Pemba Id., Tanzania; collected by Voeltzkow, 17 March 1903 .

Comment: Matschie (1909: 486) described this species based on six specimens, and designated the male as holotype, but assigned no inventory numbers to them. He provided skull measurements for the male type as well as for four out of five females. As was noted by Andersen (1912: 819), only five skulls out of six specimens were present in 1907, rendering correct allocation of skulls to skins impossible. All six specimens were formerly uncatalogued and labelled as Pteropus sp .. The skulls “a – e” (including holotype) are currently numbered as ZMB 88677 – 88681 View Materials .
