Valid name: Pteropus capistratus Peters, 1876
Syntypes (identified by Andersen 1912: 321): ZMB 4998 View Materials , skin, male, subadult. ZMB 4999 View Materials , skin and skull, female, subadult. Both from New Ireland, Papua-New Guinea; collector unknown; Expedition S.M.S “Gazelle” 1876 .
Comment: The New Ireland population probably represents a distinct subspecies Pteropus capistratus ennisae (see Flannery & White, 1991).
