Diagnosis. Holophris taiwana ( Tsuneki, 1970) is similar to red specimens of H. marginella ( Mocsáry, 1890) for body colouration; however it can be separated from the latter by polished mesoscutellum (longitudinally striated in H. marginella ).

Redescription. Female. Body length 3.6–4.2 mm ( Fig. 5A View FIGURE 5 ). Fore wing length 2.5–2.8 mm. OOL = 1.7 MOD; POL = 2.1 MOD; MS = 1.4 MOD; relative length of P:F1:F2:F3 = 1:1.2:0.7:0.6.

Head. Frons with shallow punctures ( Fig. 5B View FIGURE 5 ), intervals weakly wrinkled transversally; vertex with reduced punctuation; from ocellar area to occipital area impunctate, with sparse tiny punctures. Scapal basin deep and polished. In lateral view, longest distance between genal carina and lower margin of eye 0.8 MOD; genal carina bisecting MS, its end near lower margin of eye (0.4 MOD). Gena polished with sparse tiny punctures and wrinkles towards MS. Ocellar triangle isosceles. Postocellar line absent.

Mesosoma. Pronotum impunctate, with sparse tiny punctures; with row of small and deep punctures on anterior margin and antero-laterally with corrugated intervals. Mesoscutum impunctate, with sparse tiny punctures ( Fig. 5C View FIGURE 5 ); notaular pits small (less than 0.5 MOD), notauli indistinct ( Fig. 5C View FIGURE 5 ); parapsidal furrows indistinct. Mesoscutellum with four anterior foveae, with two median foveae large and two lateral foveae smaller (less than 1/ 3 long), median foveae separated by almost 2 MOD; mesoscutellum impunctate medially, with large and round punctures towards alar foveae ( Fig. 5D View FIGURE 5 ). Metanotum evenly rounded, with deep and round punctures subequally interspaced, with distinct smooth intervals. Mesopleuron with sparse punctures, increasing in diameter from alar fovea to omaulus, with elongated sub-transverse striae from upper anterior margin to posterior margin. Tarsal claw with three teeth.

Metasoma. T1 impunctate. T2 and T3 almost impunctate, with sparse tiny punctures close to lateral margins. T1 without semitransparent rim. T2 and T3 with wide brown semitransparent rim (> 2 MOD). Apex of T3 without distinct median notch ( Fig. 5F View FIGURE 5 ).

Colouration. Face metallic greenish-blue; ocellar area, gena and occipital area black. Mesosoma dorsally black; pronotal antero-lateral corners, omaulus and sterna greenish-blue; mesoscutellum laterally, intervals between punctures on metanotum and mesopleuron metallic red to bronze ( Figs 5A–5D View FIGURE 5 ). Antenna black, with scape metallic blue. Tegula brown, without metallic reflection. Legs metallic bluish green, with tarsi light brown to testaceous, without metallic reflection. Metasoma entirely black, excluding brown semitransparent rim on posterior margins of T2 and T3.

Male. Similar to females, but usually with smaller body (3.0– 3.7 mm) and rounder posterior margin of T3.

Distribution. China ( Taiwan, Guangdong, Hainan), * India, * Indonesia, * Laos, and Thailand.
