Anthicus monsonicus nom. nov.

Anthicus caroli Bonadona, 1978: 75 (not Anthicus (Cyclodinus) caroli Pic, 1893a: 115 )

Notes

Pic (1893a) described Anthicus (Cyclodinus) caroli from "? Espagne " [=? Spain] ( Pic 1893b: 128). This subgenus was first treated as a distinct genus by Bonadona (1958: 101). Nardi & Mifsud (2003) summarized the literature on this species, which was placed in synonymy with Cyclodinus desbrochersi (Pic, 1893) by Bonadona (1988). Bonadona (1978) created a primary homonym when he described Anthicus caroli from Dinajpur ( Bangla Desh), which was later cited only by Brivio (1977). The replacement name Anthicus monsonicus nom. nov. is here proposed for this species, and is based on the Latinized word for monsoonal, referring to the climate of the type locality.

Anthicus sellatus (Panzer, 1796)

Anthicus tristis tristis Schmidt, 1842

Material examined

Armenia: Yerevan, Nubarashen, 30.IV.1990, Kalashian leg., 6 ɗɗ, 7 ΨΨ ( CGN, CSV). Georgia: Mcxeta, 12.VIII.1987, E. Pascucci leg., 1 ɗ ( CGN).

Notes

Anthicus tristis is widespread from the Atlantic coasts of Europe and Morocco to Afghanistan and Tajikistan (cf. Nardi 2004c; Uhmann et al. 2005). However, it was previously known from Georgia only on the basis of very old records: " Iberia " (an old name of this country) ( Kolenati 1846: 35, as A. bifasciatus Rossi var. tristis ) and " Georgia " ( LaFerté-Sénectère 1849b, as A. tristis ). The situation for Armenia is similar: " Armenia " ( Kolenati 1846: 35, as A. bifasciatus var. tristis ), "Caucasus, Arm. Geb." and "Kaukasus, Araxesthal" ( Uhmann 1985), but it is unclear whether these records refer to the current Armenian territory or not. These records and those for Romania ( Montandon 1908, as A. tristis ) and Yemen ( Pic & Hawkins 1957, as A. tristis and A. tristis var. truquii Desbrochers des Loges, 1875) were recently overlooked ( Uhmann et al. 2005, as A. tristis ).
