Description. Forewings 2.0 times longer than wide, length 2.7–2.9 mm. Colour dark reddish brown dorsally, stramineous underneath; antennae light brown; in front of eyes bright red; abdomen red, genitalia grey. Forewings infuscated; heavily powdered; costal and apical margins as well as adjoining sections of veins bright red. Hindwings infuscated, margins red. Rostrum slightly surpassing tip of abdomen; antennae elongated. Forewings with Sc+R fork in basal third; Ms1 branched distad of its middle, base of Ms1 touches base of Cu1. Male genitalia with pygofer narrow. Genital styles broad, rounded; bases of dorsal processes contiguous. Aedeagus stem with two short, pointed, dorsal processes near junction with apical part; apical part flat, the pointed tip curved to the left.

Etymology. The species is named for the collector and ' cranstoni ' is a latinized noun used in the genitive case.

Distribution. Borneo ( Sarawak).

Diagnosis. Alara cranstoni resembles externally A. kershawi (Muir) also from Borneo, but has light brown antennae. The male genitalia are characterized by the contiguous bases of the dorsal processes of the genital styles, by the aedeagus stem bearing two short and pointed dorsal processes, and by the pointed aedeagus tip.
