Description. Forewings 1.9 times longer than wide, length about 5.6 mm. Forewings with black marks separated by a broad red band; middle of Ms2 and last subcostal sector with additional red marks. Forewings with apex of Sc slightly sinuate; Sc+R fork before middle of wing; Ms1 branched a short distance after apex of basal median cell. Male genitalia with pygofer narrow. Aedeagus slender; apical part without lateral teeth, ending in two straight, pointed processes of equal length.

Note. Very similar to Rhotana dextra sp. nov. The above description has been shortened, due to this similarity.

Etymology. The species name is a Latin adjective (aequus, -a, -um = equal).

Type material. Holotype ♂ (forewing 5.6 mm), PAPUA NEW GUINEA: PAPUA; labels: 1) NEW GUINEA: (NE)/ Karimui , South of / Goroka, 1000 m / 3.VI.1961 2) J.L. & M. Gressitt / Collectors ( BPBM).

Distribution. New Guinea (Papua).

Diagnosis. Rhotana aequa resembles closely R. dextra sp. nov. from New Britain and R. gracilis sp. nov. from the Island of New Guinea. It can be distinguished from these by the male aedeagus ending in two straight, but not slender, pointed processes of equal length.
