Description. Forewings 2.0 times longer than wide, length about 4.6 mm. Colour stramineous; mesonotum light brown; middle tibiae tinted with red (fore legs missing in examined specimen). Forewings with 6 dark marks near hind margin, distad of claval tip; a large grey area at middle of wing in front of these marks; two faint bands of infuscation across wing base, along anterior apical cross-veins, and along apical margin; veins stramineous, but reddish in between the dark marks. Hindwings colourless (damaged in the examined specimen). Facial carinae not quite meeting at their bases; rostrum surpassing post-trochanter; subantennal processes and lateral carinae of pronotum well developed. Forewings with apical part of Sc nearly straight; Sc+R fork well before middle of wing; Ms1 branched near tip of basal median cell, a large triangle at base of Ms1. Male genitalia with pygofer narrow. Apical part of aedeagus flat, tapering towards a nearly pointed end; a rounded, flat dorsal lobe covers the right side.

Etymology. The species name is a latinized noun (Argus, from the Greek mythology who had many eyes) used in apposition.

Type material. Holotype ♂ (forewing 4.6 mm), INDONESIA: SULAWESI; labels: 1) SULAWESI TEN- GAH:/ Nr. Morowali,/ Ranu River Area ./ 27.i. – 20.iv. 1980 2) M.J.D. Brendell / B.M. 1980-280 3) At / light ( BMNH).

Distribution. Central Sulawesi ( Indonesia).

Diagnosis. Rhotana argus is similar to R. pavo (Bierman) from Sumatra and Borneo. It can be distinguished by the forewings having smaller and fewer marks, by the large grey area in the middle of the forewings, and by the nearly pointed tip of the aedeagus.
