(Figs. 4, 198)

Redescription. Forewings 2.0 times longer than wide, length: male 4.1–5.2 mm (mean = 4.6, n= 8), female 4.8–5.2 mm. Colour stramineous; in male pleura of pre-genital segment faintly orange. Forewings glassy; slightly infuscated in first two costal cells and along most veins of basal half of wing; apical cross-veins bordered by infuscated bands; veins stramineous, but in holotype the following veins orange-red: middle sections of C, Sc, R and M, subcostal sectors except for first, and the apical cross-veins including adjoining parts of main veins. Hindwings with three short, slightly curved, dark brown stripes around bases of Ms1 and Ms2. Facial carinae contiguous up to lower margin of eyes; rostrum reaching hind coxae; subantennal processes and lateral carinae of pronotum poorly developed. Forewings with apical part of Sc sinuate; Sc+R fork at end of basal third of wing; Ms1 branched at end of its basal quarter; Ms1b connected to apical part of Cu1 by a short cross-vein, a small triangle at base of Ms1. Male genitalia with pygofer slightly and roundly produced at the sides; genital styles elongated, truncated at the apex; proximal dorsal process short, its pointed tip curved inwards, a hump at its base; distal dorsal process elongated, its tip curved outwards. Apical part of aedeagus with a longitudinal, dorsal impression, ending in a short, membranous lobe.

Etymology. We consider the species name to be a latinized adjective (satsumanus, -a, -um = from Satsuma). The name seems to have been formed similar to 'africanus' from Africa and 'formosanus' from Formosa.

Type material. Holotype (presumed) of R. satsumana ♂ (forewing 5.2 mm, body 3.3 mm), JAPAN: KYUSHU; labels: 1) [Kagoshima, 7/10] (in Japanese) 2) Rhotana satsumana / det. Matsumura ( EIHU); Holotype of R. satsumana contracta (not examined), ♀, Suisapa, Lichuan District, W. Hupeh, China, 1000m, 24. VII.1948, Gressitt ( CAS).

Other material examined. CHINA: HONG KONG: N. T., Taipokau, Kowloon, 6. VI – 6. VII.1964, 27.VIII + 24.IX.1965, 8 ♂ 2 ♀, W.J. Voss, Wai Ming Hui, Lee Kit Ming, light - and Malaise trap; TAIWAN: Keelung, 100m, 4–8.X.1957, 1 ♀ , T.C. Maa (all BPBM) .

Note. Figure 198s shows a live specimen photographed in 1995 by Keiji Morishima in Utsunomiya, Tochigi, Japan who also provided the identification.

Distribution. Japan (Kyushu), China ( Hong Kong), Taiwan.

Diagnosis. Rhotana satsumana closely resembles R. formosana Matsumura and R. obaerata Yang & Wu from the same region, as well as R. transversolinea Melichar and R. jacobsoni sp. nov. from Indonesia and Malaysia. It can be recognized by the three curved, dark stripes on the hindwings and by the lighter forewings. Rhotana satsumana contracta has not been examined. According to Fennah it differs by the forewings lacking a triangle at the base of Ms1.
