Neohybos elegans View in CoL sp. n.
( Figs. 36 – 43 View FIGURES 36–43 , 79 View FIGURES 74–81 )
Diagnosis. Thorax dark-brown to black, brown pruinose except dorsum of pronotum, basal two-thirds of scutum and postpronotal lobe; thoracic setae short, yellowish anteriorly, darker and stout on prescutellar disc, 1 posterior dc pair strong; wing sub-hyaline, stigma evenly brownish, not filling apex of r1; legs yellow except coxae dark-brown, trochanters, apex of hind femur, apex of hind tibia and tarsomeres 3 to 5 brown; hind tibia strongly falciform; bristles of fore and mid tarsomeres notably longer than usual; abdomen and legs clothed in yellow bristles.
Description. Holotype male. Body: 4.8 mm. Wing: 3.8 mm. Antenna placed at middle of head; postpedicel oval, narrow, 3.5 times longer than wide, 3.3 times longer than scape and pedicel combined. Face narrowly dichoptic. Pair of ocellar setae long, divergent. Upper facets conspicuously enlarged. Postcranium with brownish pruinescence; occipital setae short and dark, inconspicuous inferiorly.
Thorax dark-brown to black, brown pruinose except dorsum of pronotum, basal two-thirds of scutum and postpronotal lobe lacking pruinescence; thoracic setae short and sparse, yellowish on anterior region, darker and stout on prescutellar disc; acr biserial on anterior region and irregularly uniserial on prescutellar disc; dc uniserial, mixed with ial and spal on presutural region; 1 dc pair very long and robust on prescutellar disc; 2 npl long and strong, longer than apical scutellar pair; scutellum with 1 apical pair divergent and robust and 3 lateral pairs short and weak, about one-third length of apical pair.
Wing ( Fig. 79 View FIGURES 74–81 ) narrow; sub-hyaline with evenly brownish, stigma not filling apex of r1; R4+5 and M1 slightly convergent.
Legs yellow except coxae dark-brown, trochanters, distal two-fifths of hind femur, distal one-fifth of hind tibia and tarsomeres 3 to 5 brown. Bristles yellow. Hind femur elongate and discreetly thickened, 3.3 times longer than wide, strongly convex dorsally and slightly concave ventrally at distal two-fifths; hind tibia tubular, strongly falciform. Outstanding bristles: fore tibia with 1 anterior and 1 posterior preapical bristles reaching half of corresponding tarsomere 1; mid tibia with 3 anterodorsal bristles (1 sub-basal, 1 at basal third and 1 at distal third), 1 very long ventroapical bristle longer than corresponding tarsomere 1; all outstanding bristles of fore and mid tarsomeres notably longer than usual, mid tarsomere 1 with 1 posterior sub-basal bristle reaching base of second tarsomere; hind trochanter with 2 strong posteroventral bristles; hind femur with 1 dorsal bristle near apex, 9 anteroventral bristles, 14–15 short ventral thorns, 13 posteroventral thorns (10 at distal two-thirds and 3 at basal quarter) increasing in length distally except two more basal thorns thicker and twice longer than others.
Abdomen 4 times longer than thoracic length; dark brown, shiny, with inconspicuous brown pruinescence on Tg1 and Tg8; bristles yellow, scattered and thin, long on Tg1 and Tg2; St8 more wide than long, with long yellow bristles on distal margin. Terminalia ( Figs. 36–40 View FIGURES 36–43 ): epandrium strongly asymmetrical, left epandrial lamella twice length of right epandrial lamella; hypandrium with broad median lobe with truncated apex; bacilliform sclerite with broad preapical process bearing two elongate finger-like tubercle; dorsal bridge complete; postgonites wide, ribbon-like.
Female. Similar to male except for: body brown; thorax bristles slender than male; stigma brown filling apex of r1; hind femur with 3 yellow thin bristles on basal third and 5 thorns on distal half of anteroventral surface, 11 short ventral thorns on distal half and 4 spine-like posteroventral bristles on distal quarter, preapical bristles lacking; bristles of tarsomeres 1 and 2 of fore and mid legs not long as male. Terminalia ( Figs. 41– 43 View FIGURES 36–43 ): segment 7 with one great protuberance ventrally and smaller protuberance on each side; Tg8 reduced to faintly sclerotized narrow longitudinal sclerite.
Distribution. Ecuador, Colombia.
Type material. Holotype male: ECUADOR: Napo, Tena , iv.1976, M. Cooper ( BMNH) . Paratypes: ECUADOR: Pinas , 1500 m, 14.viii.1941, D.M. Laddey, 1 specimen without abdomen ( AMNH); COLOM- BIA: Buena Ventura , Llano Bajo, 100 m, 30.ix.[19]71, M. Cooper 1 specimen without abdomen ( INPA); Mariño, Barbacaus, 2.ix.1976, M. Cooper, 1 female ( BMNH) .
Etymology. The specific name is derived from the Latin elegans = elegant; refers to the general aspect of the insect.
