Type species.— Pycna strix Amyot & Audinet-Serville, 1843: 463 ( Madagascar) .
Remarks.—The genus was recently revised and redescribed (Sanborn 2020). They are medium sized to large cicada (about 28–39 mm body length, 92–122 mm wingspan) with the head not as wide as the mesonotum, eyes not as wide as the anterior pronotal collar, lateral angles of pronotal collar dilated with rounded or a blunt apex not reaching the level of the internal angle of the basal cell when the fore wings are open, fore wings and hind wing opaque, fore wings about 2.4–2.8X longer than broad, fore wing costal margin significantly dilated near base, expanded into shelf-like extension with a broad curve at base, maximum width of expansion greater than maximum distance between costal vein and radius & subcostal vein, abdomen shorter than distance between apex of head and posterior of cruciform elevation, epipleurites bent in middle, timbal cover slightly globose laterally and reaching metathorax anteriorly, small portion of dorsal timbal visible, lateral uncus lobe extended generally in an arch, broad, diverging from the base to the apex (Sanborn 2020).
Distribution.—All currently assigned species are now restricted to Madagascar ( Metcalf 1963a; Duffels & van der Laan 1985; Sanborn 2013; 2020).
