Antankaria signoreti Metcalf 1955 View in CoL nom. nov. pro Cicada punctipes Signoret, 1860 nec Zetterstedt, 1828: 267.

Remarks.—An ochraceous species covered in white pubescence and marked with fuscous or piceous. The generic characters will separate the only known species of the genus. The male opercula and tympanal cavity are proportionately large but the opercula still only extend to the anterior margin of sternite II. Body length is 13–18 mm, wingspan is 40–54 mm ( Signoret 1860; Stål 1866; Distant 1892; specimens in hand). The song is a pulsating train of syllables with peak energy distributed between between 10.5 and 13.5 kHz sounding like a whistle ( Boulard 1999; 2006b).

Distribution.—The species has been reported only from Madagascar ( Metcalf 1963a; Sanborn 2013). Distant (1892) and Jacobi (1917) report the species from northern Madagascar. Jacobi (1917) also reported the species from Tulear, southwestern Madagascar. Boulard (1999) reports the species from the prairie in the surroundings of Beroka.
