Thrips shiranensis View in CoL sp. n.

( Figs 3, 7 View FIGURES 1–8 , 10, 13, 16, 17, 19, 22 View FIGURES 9–23 )

Female macroptera . Distended body length 1.6–1.7 mm. Body uniformly yellow ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1–8 ); antennal segment I yellow, II–VII brown, IV and V slightly pale at base ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 9–23 ); fore wings including clavus uniformly pale; all legs yellow; major setae brown. Head 0.8–0.9 times as long as width, sculptured with transverse anastomosing striae dorsally, slightly prolonged in front of ocellar triangle, cheeks straight, interantennal projection slightly wide ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 1–8 ). Ocellar setae III situated lateral to fore ocellus and longer than diameter of ocellus. Postocular setae II usually behind setal row, all subequal length. Antennae 7-segmented, segment II with no or a few microtrichia, III with short apical neck, III or IV longest, sense-cones on III and IV elongate (33–43 μm long), reaching to basal third of next segments, V pedicelate, VI straight at each side of basal half and tapering apically, not pedicelate. Ratio length/width of segments I–VII as follows: 0.9, 1.3–1.4, 2.4–2.7, 2.7–3.1, 2.1–2.4, 3.1, 2.3–2.7. Pronotum about 0.7 times as long as wide, covered with transverse short anastomosing striae, with about 16 discal setae; posteroangular setae 2 pairs, setae I 0.4–0.6 times as long as median pronotal length, subequal length to or slightly longer than setae II; posteromarginal setae 2 pairs (rarely 5 setae), S1 setae twice as long as S2 setae. Mesonotum with paired CPS anteromedially; medial pair of setae closer to submedian pairs than to each other. Metascutum sculptured with transverse short striae anteromedially and posteromedially, irregularly sculptured at middle; median pair of setae much behind anterior margin, wide apart from each other, 0.5–0.6 times as long as metascutal median length; paired CPS present. Metascutellum transverse. Fore wing costal vein with 19–23 setae, first vein with 5–7 basal and 2 distal setae, second vein with 8–10 setae; clavus with 5 (rarely 6) veinal and 1 discal setae. Abdominal tergites sculptured with anastomosing striae throughout, slightly weak posteromedially; tergites II–VIII with S1 setae subequal length to S2 setae, arranged transversely ( Figs 16, 17 View FIGURES 9–23 ); tergite II with four lateral marginal setae, accessary seta mesad of lateral margin; tergite VIII with posteromarginal comb complete but slightly weak laterally, microtrichia short, length and intervals irregular ( Fig. 19 View FIGURES 9–23 ); tergite IX with 2 pairs of CPS; tergite X with median split almost complete; sternites without discal setae; sternite I without microsetae; sternites III–VII with 3 pairs of posteromarginal setae, but II with 2 pairs; sternite VII with S1 setae slightly in front of posterior margin ( Fig. 22 View FIGURES 9–23 ); pleurotergites without discal setae and dentate microtrichia. Ovipositor 0.7 times as long as pronotal median length.

Male unknown.

Measurements of holotype female in microns. Body length 1650. Head length 132, width across cheeks 150; compound eye dorsal length 57, width 40. Pronotal median length 140, width 203; posteroangular setae I (outer setae) length 59–78, setae II length 60–78, posteromarginal setae I length 25–28. Metascutal median length 75; median pair of setae length 40–45. Fore wing length 730, width at middle 55. Abdominal tergite IX length 83, tergite X length 66. Ovipositor length 235. Antennal segments I–VII length (width) as follows: 30 (35), 40 (29), 60 (24), 58 (21), 43 (19), 55 (18), 18 (8).

Type series. Holotype female, JAPAN, Honshu, Gunma Pref., Kusatsu-cho, nr. Mt. Shinane-san , alt 2100m, on flower of Gentiana scabra [ Gentianaceae ], 12.viii.2016, M. Masumoto . Paratypes: 2 females collected together with holotype

.

Comments. This species is slightly similar to T. phormiicola Mound described from New Zealand because of the long head, and abdominal tergites with long S1 setae and sculpture lines medially. However, T. phormiicola is brown, micropterous and the metascutum irregularly reticulate, abdominal tergite II has three lateral marginal setae ( Mound, 1978), and abdominal sternite II bears three pairs of marginal setae ( Mound & Masumoto 2005). In this genus, this new species is apparently unique in the metascutum with transverse sculpture at anterior and posterior, and the metascutellum narrowly transverse ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 1–8 ).
