Phania Meigen View in CoL

Phania Meigen, 1824: 218 View in CoL . Type species: Phania obscuripennis Meigen, 1824 (as “ P. obscuriformis, Meigen, Zweif. Ins. vol. iv. p. 219, pl. 40, fig. 5–10”), by subsequent designation (Stephens in Richardson, 1837: 301).

Originally Included species: Phania obscuripennis Meigen, 1824 ; Phania vittata Meigen, 1824 ; Phania lateritia Meigen, 1824 ; Phania thoracica Meigen, 1824 ; Tachina curvicauda Fallén, 1820 View in CoL .

Family: Tachinidae .

Current status: Valid genus [teste Herting & Dely-Draskovits (1993: 434)].

Remarks: Previous catalogs (e.g., Herting & Dely-Draskovits, 1993: 434) had given the typification of this genus-group name as Tachina curvicauda Fallén, 1820 (as “ P. curvicauda .”), by subsequent designation of Westwood (1840: 140). Acceptance of the designation by Stephens in Richardson (1837) of Phania obscuripennis could cause instability of nomenclature and taxonomy of Phania as it would make it the senior synonym of Hemyda Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 and require a substitute name for species currently in Phania . Uromyia Meigen, 1838 is the next available name for species currently placed in the genus Phania Meigen, 1824 . Application to the ICZN to suppress the designation of Stephens in Richardson (1837) may be warranted in order to conserve the current generic concept of Phania Meigen, 1824 .
