Palloptera Fallén View in CoL View at ENA

Palloptera Fallén, 1820: 23 View in CoL . Type species: Musca gangraenosa Panzer, 1798 (as “ P. gangraenosa, Fallén ; Panzer, Faun. Ins. Germ. Init. pl. lix, fig. 22”), by subsequent designation (Stephens in Richardson, 1837: 32).

Originally Included species: Musca gangraenosa Panzer, 1798 ; Palloptera ustulata Fallén, 1820 View in CoL ; Musca arcuata Fabricius, 1781 ; Palloptera marginella Fallén, 1820 View in CoL .

Family: Pallopteridae .

Current status: Valid genus [teste Morge (1984: 243)].

Remarks: Previous catalogs (e.g., Morge, 1984: 243; Sabrosky, 1999: 231) have given the typification of this genus-group name as Musca umbellatarum Fabricius, 1775 by subsequent designation of Westwood (1840: 150). Acceptance of the type designation of Musca gangraenosa Panzer, 1798 by Stephens in Richardson (1837) would cause instability of nomenclature and taxonomy of Palloptera Fallén, 1820 (currently the type genus of the family Pallopteridae ) as it would place it as the senior synonym of the genus Melieria Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 in the family Ulidiidae and would require a substitute genus-group name for species currently treated in Palloptera Fallén, 1820 . Toxoneura Macquart, 1835 is the next available name for species currently treated in Palloptera Fallén, 1820 . Application to the ICZN to suppress the designation of Musca gangraenosa Panzer, 1798 in order to conserve the current generic concept of Palloptera Fallén, 1820 is warranted.
