Tridophyllum Necker ex Greene 1906
Elementa botanica ( Necker, 1790) is suppressed ( Wiersema & al., 2018 –) and all genera in that publication are considered to be not validly published. Greene (1906a), however, is later considered to have described the genus while discussing Necker’ s genus, which was based on the trifoliate species of Potentilla ( Linnaeus, 1753) . Greene designated a type by stating that Necker’ s type was P. monspeliensis L. (basionym). As Necker did not name any species, the supposition of Greene was probably based on the fact that it was the first species listed by Linnaeus (1753: 499) under “Foliis ternatis”. Potentilla monspeliensis is now included in P. norvegica L. ( Torrey & Gray, 1838 –1840; Ertter & al., 2014), which is an allopolyploid with ancestral lineages in the Argentea and Ivesioid clades ( Persson & al., 2020b).
