Hinds, 1844: 154.

Type locality: ‘Abundant in various localities on the west coast of America between Panama and the Bay of Magdalena in Lower California, in from five to thirteen fathoms; also at the Galapagos, in ten fathoms’. Label locality: ‘ Galapagos Is.’ ( NHMUK 1979124), ‘ Panama, 13 fms’ ( NHMUK 1968204), ‘ Central America 5-10 fms’ ( NHMUK 1844.6.7.83).

Type material: Lectotype NHMUK 1979124 and 2 paralectotypes NHMUK 1968204 (H. Cuming collection), 1 paralectotype NHMUK 1844.6.7.83 (E. Belcher collection). Indirect lectotype selection by inference of holotype ( Cernohorsky, 1969: 212).

Remarks: ‘Mazatlan, Mexico’ designated as type locality by Bratcher & Cernohorsky (1987: 140).
