Genus Taphura Stål, 1862 View in CoL View at ENA

Cicada (Taphura) Stål 1862: 20 View in CoL .

Type species. Cicada misella Stål 1854: 243 View in CoL ( Brazil, Minas Gerais).

Remarks. The recent revision of the genus provided a second record for Suriname ( Sanborn 2017a). Species of the genus are characterized by their relatively small body size (body length 6–18 mm) and the elaborate male genitalia displayed by the majority of species. The structures of the genitalia make distinguishing species relatively easy.

Distribution. The genus is found over much of South America including references to Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Panama, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad, and Venezuela ( Metcalf 1963c; Duffels & van der Laan 1985; Sanborn 2011a; 2013; 2016b; 2017a; 2018b; 2019b; 2020a, c, d, e; Sanborn & Heath 2014).
