Tarenna canarica View in CoL ( Beddome (1872, 134/8) Bremekamp (1934: 189).

Pavetta canarica Beddome View in CoL ( Beddome 1872: 134 /8); Webera canarica (Beddome) Hooker (1882: 106) View in CoL ; Ixora canarica (Beddome) Kuntze (1891: 278) View in CoL ; Stylocoryne canarica (Beddome) Gamble & Fischer (1921: 448) .

Type: Karnataka, South Canara Ghats (not traceable). Neotype (here designated): — INDIA, Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram district, Merchiston, 2000 feet, 10 April 1895, T.F. Bourdillon 594 (barcode L2954713 , digital image). Figure 1 View FIGURE 1 .

Pavetta canarica Beddome (1872: 134 /8) was later transferred to the genus Tarenna by Bremekamp (1934). In the protologue, Beddome has provided diagnostic features of the species as “glabrous throughout, the flowers pentamerous, fewer and rather larger but with a shorter thicker tube than in typical siphonanthus, the style stout hairy in the lower half, not much exerted (Corolla tube 1 inch, style 1 ¾ inch long)” with distribution locality as “ this I have found only on the South Canara ghats ”. However, failed to provide collection details, or illustrations. The collections by R.H. Beddome was housed in BM, K and CAL. Our search at these herbaria were in vain and we were unable to find any specimens associated with Pavetta canarica , and therefore no original material for T. canarica is known to exist. For this reason, a neotype may be designated as per the Art. 9.8 ( Turland et al. 2018). A specimen housed at L, collected by T.F. Bourdillon from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala on 1895 is a well-preserved specimen with flowers and buds; it is congruent with the description mentioned in the protologue and is also consistent with the current application of the name T. canarica . Hence it is selected here as the neotype of T. canarica .
