Rhabdomiris striatellus ( Fabricius, 1794) View in CoL

( Figs. 1D View FIGURE 1 , 4 View FIGURE 4 A–H)

Cimex variegatus Müller, 1776: 108 (junior primary homonym of Cimex variegatus Poda, 1761 ; Synonymized by Reuter, 1888:

252). Cimex pulligo Harris, 1780: 89 (nomen oblitum; Synonymized by Stephens, 1829: 349). Cimex quadripunctatus Villers, 1789: 535 (junior primary homonym of Cimex quadripunctatus Müller, 1766 ; Synonymized by Reuter, 1888: 252). Cimex ochromelas Gmelin, 1790: 2180 (junior primary homonym of Cimex ochromelas Gmelin, 1790: 2165 ). Lygaeus striatellus Fabricius, 1794: 173 . Calocoris striatellus Kerzhner, 1970: 141 . Rhabdomiris striatellus Rosenzweig, 1997: 168 ; Zheng et al. 2004: 568 (Chinese record (?)). Rhabdomiris striatellus wagneri Kerzhner & Schuh, 1998: 172 .

Diagnosis: Distinguished by body brownish and somewhat smaller; third antennal segment dark brown; frons pale brown with narrow longitudinal dark stripe; pronotum yellowish brown with distinctive four dark maculae in anterior part, patterns not connecting to dark band in posterior part, sometimes size of patterns variable, posterior part with dark brown band, dark band separated in middle part, posterior margin pale brown; scutellum entirely brown; mesoscutum dark brown ( Figs. 1D View FIGURE 1 ); left paramere relatively not thick, angled dorsally, weakly projected near sensory lobe, process of sensory lobe relatively short and weakly rounded, lateral tooth small ( Figs. 4 View FIGURE 4 A–B); right paramere narrow, hypophysis slightly short, its apex blunt ( Fig. 4C View FIGURE 4 ); endosomal spicule as long as membranous lobe, broader from subapical part; lateral sclerite I triangular, tapered to apex; lateral sclerite II with tiny spinules in only upper and lateral part; medial sclerite shorter than membranous lobe ( Figs. 4 View FIGURE 4 D–F); sclerotized ring oval; sclerotized perimeter of combined common oviduct and dorsal wall of genital chamber narrowly developed ( Fig. 4G View FIGURE 4 ); lateral lobe of posterior wall distinctly developed, spine-like structure; dorsal structure largely developed, with distinct small spinules on the whole part ( Fig. 4H View FIGURE 4 ).

Description: see Henry (2017) for detailed description.

MALE GENITALIA: Left paramere somewhat narrow and angled dorsally with hook-shaped hypophysis, hypophysis somewhat long, its apex rounded; sensory lobe with noticeable process, process short ( Fig. 4A View FIGURE 4 ), lateral tooth small in lateral view ( Fig. 4B View FIGURE 4 ); right paramere with somewhat short and thick hypophysis, its apex blunt ( Fig. 4C View FIGURE 4 ); endosoma membranous with one long spicule and three sclerites; sp as long as membranous lobe, broader from subapical part; ls I thick and tapered to apex; ls II with tiny spinules in only upper and lateral part; ms bifurcated, shorter than membranous lobe, length of each part different, one part short ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 D–F).

FEMALE GENITALIA: sr oval, not closed to each other, spgc developed, not broad ( Fig. 4G View FIGURE 4 ); irl not surpassing irs, irl broader than ds, with distinct small spinules, llb distinctly developed, ds oval and broadly developed, with small spinules on the whole part ( Fig. 4H View FIGURE 4 ).

Material Examined: [ CRBA] 1♂, Seva , Seva , Osona, Barcelona, Catalunya, Spain, 21.v.1961, J. Ribes leg. [CRBA-71208]; [ CRBA] 2♂♂ 3♀♀, Can Miqueldolca , Santa Coloma, Andorra la Vella, Andorra, 15.vi.1993, by Malaise (01–15.vi.1993), M. Goula leg. [CRBA-39626] .

Distribution: Azerbaijan, Armenia, China, Iran, Turkey, Georgia, Europe (see Aukema & Rieger 1999 for detailed European distribution), North America. The record of this species to Korean fauna is deleted.

Hosts: Quercus sp. ( Fagaceae ) ( Gollner-Scheiding 1970; 1972; Josifov 1974; Leston 1961).

Remarks: Wagner (1974) mentioned the character state, markings on scutellum, to be variable in two types of R. striatellus (indicated as two subspecies, Calocoris quadripunctatus quadripunctatus and C. quadripunctatus fasciatus ), even though all examined specimens in this study were consistent to have scutellum without any markings. Zheng et al. (2004) also reported the species as R. striatellus (without pictures), but it is suspected that the species is not R. striatellus , but R. koreanus sp. nov. because it has scutellum with dark longitudinal stripe in accordance with the description (in Chinese). Henry (2017) recently provided detailed description of this species, including the ranges of variation of important characters.
